==Early life and career==
Linge was born in [Trondheim](/source/Trondheim), Norway. He was the son of [Martin Linge](/source/Martin_Linge)  who was  known for his war effort in [Kompani Linge](/source/Kompani_Linge).

He was a member of the [merchant navy](/source/merchant_navy) for two years before undertaking a [naval architecture](/source/naval_architecture) course while financing his studies by working in a shipyard.<ref>{{Cite web | url=http://www.sailing.org/default.asp?PID=8566 | title=Beppe Cruce presentation | publisher=[ISAF](/source/International_Sailing_Federation) | accessdate=2007-06-25}}</ref>

During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), he joined the [Norwegian resistance movement](/source/Norwegian_resistance_movement) and was trained as a saboteur in the [United Kingdom](/source/United_Kingdom). He was captured on a mission and spent some time in a German [prison camp](/source/Prisoner-of-war_camp).<ref name="NorwayPostDeath"/>  Linge completed his studies in 1949.<ref name="nbl"/>

==Design work==
Linge was an engineer from 1949 to 1956 in [Westermoen Båtbyggeri og Mek Verksted](/source/Westermoen_B%C3%A5tbyggeri_og_Mek_Verksted), and was responsible for the design of the [Tjeld class patrol boat](/source/Tjeld_class_patrol_boat).<ref name="nbl"/>
He later started his own boat design house, Jan H. Linge A/S, and has designed many recreational vessel for other  companies.<ref>

==Sail boats==
He was also a very active designer of [sail boats](/source/sail_boats). The designs by Linge are known by the "ling" suffix, such as Brisling, Firling, Fjordling, Gambling 34, Lærling, Mekling, Smiling, Wesling and Willing. The [Soling](/source/Soling) was selected as Olympic class in 1968, and participated in 8 Olympic games.
