# Jamie Sykes

**James Frederick Sykes** (born 30 December 1965) is a former English [cricketer](/source/Cricket). Sykes was a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman_(cricket)) who bowled right-arm [off break](/source/Off_break). He was born at [Shoreditch](/source/Shoreditch), London and educated at Bow Comprehensive.

Sykes made his [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) debut for [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_County_Cricket_Club) against [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [1983 County Championship](/source/1983_County_Championship). Between then and his next appearance for Middlesex, Sykes played Youth [Test cricket](/source/Test_cricket) for [England Young Cricketers](/source/England_Under-19_cricket_team) against the [West Indies Young Cricketers](/source/West_Indies_Under-19_cricket_team), making three Test appearances during England's tour to the West Indies in 1985.[1] He next appeared for Middlesex in the [1985 season](/source/1985_English_cricket_season), making thereafter 29 further first-class appearances for the county, the last of which came against [Worcestershire](/source/Worcestershire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [1989 County Championship](/source/1989_County_Championship).[2] In his 30 first-class matches, he scored 696 runs at an [average](/source/Batting_average_(cricket)) of 22.45, with a high score of 126.[3] This score was his only first-class [century](/source/Century_(cricket)) and came against [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) in 1985.[4] With the ball, he took 30 wickets at a [bowling average](/source/Bowling_average) of 38.56, with best figures of 4/49.[5]

He made his [List A](/source/List_A_cricket) debut for the county against Lancashire in the [1983 John Player Special League](/source/1983_John_Player_Special_League). He made 36 further List A appearances for Middlesex, the last of which came against [Worcestershire](/source/Worcestershire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [1989 Refuge Assurance League](/source/1989_Refuge_Assurance_League).[6] In his 37 List A appearances, he scored 386 runs at an average of 20.31, with a high score of 57.[7] This score represented the only time he passed [fifty](/source/Half_century) in this format, with it coming against [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [1988 Refuge Assurance League](/source/1988_Refuge_Assurance_League).[8] With the ball, he took 25 wickets at an average of 26.76, with best figures of 3/26.[9]

Having been an infrequent part of the Middlesex first team throughout the eighties, Sykes left the county at the end of the [1989 season](/source/1989_English_cricket_season) and joined [Durham](/source/Durham_County_Cricket_Club), then still a [Minor county](/source/Minor_counties_of_English_and_Welsh_cricket), for the [1990 season](/source/1990_English_cricket_season). He made a single List A appearance for Durham in the [1990 NatWest Trophy](/source/1990_NatWest_Trophy) against [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire_County_Cricket_Club) at [Old Trafford](/source/Old_Trafford_Cricket_Ground).[6] In Durham's innings he was dismissed for 4 by [Phil DeFreitas](/source/Phil_DeFreitas), while in Lancashire's innings he took the wicket [Mike Atherton](/source/Mike_Atherton), with Lancashire winning by 8 wickets.[10] The 1990 season was his only season playing for Durham, during which he also made two appearances in the [Minor Counties Championship](/source/Minor_Counties_Championship)[11] and two appearances in the [MCCA Knockout Trophy](/source/MCCA_Knockout_Trophy).[12]
