Jamie was born on September 17, 1966, at [The Children's Aid Society](/source/The_Children's_Aid_Society) of [New York City](/source/New_York_City) to an unwed teenage mother. He was placed with a foster family who adopted him.

In 1981 while living with his adopted family in [Stockholm, Sweden](/source/Stockholm%2C_Sweden) Jamie was cast in his first movie, ''[Montenegro](/source/Montenegro_(film))''. From 1987 to 1991 Jamie studied with [Uta Hagen](/source/Uta_Hagen) and [Herbert Berghof](/source/Herbert_Berghof) at [HB Studio](/source/HB_Studio).

In 1992 [Ellen Burstyn](/source/Ellen_Burstyn) invited Jamie to be a member of [The Actors Studio](/source/The_Actors_Studio).  Jamie has been an active member of [The Actors Studio](/source/The_Actors_Studio) west coast since 1993 studying with [Mark Rydell](/source/Mark_Rydell), [Martin Landau](/source/Martin_Landau), [Penelope Allen](/source/Penelope_Allen) and [Barbara Bain](/source/Barbara_Bain).

In 2023 after finding his birth families through Ancestry DNA Jamie changed his last name to Galen. He is now known personally and professionally as Jamie Galen.
