**James West Stack** (27 March 1835 – 13 October 1919) was a New Zealand missionary, clergyman, writer and interpreter. He was born in [Puriri](/source/Puriri,_New_Zealand), [Thames/Coromandel](/source/Thames/Coromandel), New Zealand, in 1835.[1]

His father, [James Stack](/source/James_Stack_(missionary)), had been a [Wesleyan](/source/Wesleyan_Methodist_Church_(Great_Britain)) missionary at [Whangaroa](/source/Whangaroa), who later joined the [Church Mission Society](/source/Church_Mission_Society#New_Zealand_Church_Missionary_Society) (CMS), which followed the [Anglican](/source/Anglicanism) traditions. James Stack was sent to the CMS mission in Puriri, where his son was born.[2]

He started at the boys college of St. John Evangelist, Auckland in 1846; then he attended Sydney College (later [Sydney Grammar School](/source/Sydney_Grammar_School)) from 1847. From 1851 to 1852 he attended [Highbury College, London](/source/Highbury_College,_London). From 1853 to 1860 he was a teacher at the CMS school at Kohanga Mission of the Rev. [Robert Maunsell](/source/Robert_Maunsell_(missionary)) at the [Port Waikato](/source/Port_Waikato).[3]

He was ordained a [deacon](/source/Deacon) on 23 December 1860 at Holy Trinity Church, [Lyttelton](/source/Lyttelton,_New_Zealand), and he was appointed to the [Diocese of Christchurch](/source/Anglican_Diocese_of_Christchurch) at the Tuahiwi mission among the Māori in [Canterbury](/source/Canterbury,_New_Zealand). In 1861, Stack married botanist [Elizabeth Jones](/source/Elizabeth_Stack) in Auckland.[4]

He was ordained a [priest](/source/Priest) on 21 December 1862 at [Church of St Michael and All Angels, Christchurch](/source/Church_of_St_Michael_and_All_Angels,_Christchurch). From 1864 to 1879 he worked at the Māori mission at [Kaiapoi](/source/Kaiapoi). From 1880 to 1898 he was appointed to various churches in the [Banks Peninsula](/source/Banks_Peninsula) and [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch) districts. On 11 September 1894 he was appointed as [canon](/source/Canon_(priest)) of [Christchurch Cathedral](/source/ChristChurch_Cathedral,_Christchurch).[3]

Throughout his time in New Zealand he travelled widely including as far south as [Stewart Island](/source/Stewart_Island_Air_Services).[1]

In 1898 he retired and went to live with his brother-in-law in [Bordighera](/source/Bordighera), [Liguria](/source/Liguria), Italy. From 1907 until his death in 1919 he lived at [Worthing](/source/Worthing), England.[3]

## Notes

1. Stack was the first to use the name "Kaiapohia" and many subsequent authors copied him. The term is incorrect and an insult to [Ngāi Tahu](/source/Ng%C4%81i_Tahu), as it means "the piling up of bodies to eat".[5]
