Sutcliffe served in the Royal Marines in the [First World War](/source/First_World_War). He was wounded in action in May 1915, at which point he held the [warrant officer](/source/warrant_officer) rank of [sergeant major](/source/Sergeant_major),<ref name="NEWS"/> with a commission to [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant_(British_Army_and_Royal_Marines)) coming in the same month.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=29177|date=1 June 1915|page=5208}}</ref> Shortly after he travelled with his battalion to take part in the [Gallipoli campaign](/source/Gallipoli_campaign), where he was killed in action in on or around 14 July 1915, with his body never being discovered or identified.<ref name="BOOK"/> His death was described as a "great loss" to the [Portsmouth Cathedral](/source/Portsmouth_Cathedral) choir.
