# James Strong (director)

British television director and screenwriter

**James Strong** is a British television and film director and writer, best known for his work on *[Broadchurch](/source/Broadchurch)* for which he was [BAFTA](/source/BAFTA)-nominated for Best Director Fiction 2015. He trained at [Granada TV](/source/Granada_TV) and has directed episodes of the shows *[Holby City](/source/Holby_City)* and *[Doctors](/source/Doctors_(2000_TV_series))*, as well as seven episodes of *[Doctor Who](/source/Doctor_Who)* and two episodes of its spin-off series *[Torchwood](/source/Torchwood)*. His work on the *Doctor Who* episode "[Voyage of the Damned](/source/Voyage_of_the_Damned_(Doctor_Who))" won him a [BAFTA Cymru](/source/BAFTA_Cymru) award for Best Director in 2008.[1] He also directed the 2024 [Peabody Award](/source/Peabody_Awards) winning series [Mr Bates vs The Post Office](/source/Mr_Bates_vs_The_Post_Office).

## Professional

In 2007, he directed the autobiographical documentary *[Elton John: Me, Myself & I](/source/Elton_John%3A_Me%2C_Myself_%26_I)* and in 2008 he directed three episodes of *[Bonekickers](/source/Bonekickers)*. He then directed *[Hunted](/source/Hunted_(2012_TV_series))* and *Best Possible Taste: The Kenny Everett Story* and *[Silent Witness](/source/Silent_Witness)* in 2010 followed by the feature film *[United](/source/United_(2011_film))* and *[Downton Abbey](/source/Downton_Abbey)* in 2011. He was lead director and associate producer on *[Broadchurch](/source/Broadchurch)*, which won six [BAFTAs](/source/BAFTA) including Best Drama and for which he was nominated for BAFTA Best Director Fiction.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Strong followed this with work on Series 2 of *Broadchurch*, the US remake *[Gracepoint](/source/Gracepoint)* in 2013 and other US pilots, including *Kingmakers* for ABC in 2015 and *Drew* in 2016. He also directed episodes of the [Stephen King](/source/Stephen_King) adaptation and [J. J. He was also set to direct a [J.R.R. Strong directed the feature film *[Words of War](/source/Words_of_War)* about the late Russian journalist [Anna Politkovskaya](/source/Anna_Politkovskaya). The film features [Maxine Peake](/source/Maxine_Peake) as Politkovskaya, [Jason Isaacs](/source/Jason_Isaacs) as her husband Sascha, and [Ciarán Hinds](/source/Ciar%C3%A1n_Hinds) as her [Nobel Peace Prize](/source/Nobel_Peace_Prize)-winning editor at the *[Novaya Gazeta](/source/Novaya_Gazeta)*, [Dmitry Muratov](/source/Dmitry_Muratov).[3] Variety reported that *Words of War* will be released in U.S. theaters starting on 2 May 2025.
