# James Sinclair Smith

**James Sinclair Smith** (December 27, 1816 – October 4, 1897) was a farmer, livestock breeder[1] and political figure in [Ontario](/source/Ontario), Canada.[2] He represented [Middlesex North](/source/Middlesex_North_(federal_electoral_district)) in the [Legislative Assembly of Ontario](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_Ontario) as a [Liberal](/source/Ontario_Liberal_Party) member from 1867 to 1874.

He was born in [Caithness](/source/Caithness), [Scotland](/source/Scotland) in 1816. He served as reeve of [McGillivray Township](/source/McGillivray,_Ontario) in [Middlesex County](/source/Middlesex_County,_Ontario).[2] He was defeated by [John McDougall](/source/John_McDougall_(Ontario_MPP)) in the 1875 general election.

Smith was postmaster at Maple Lodge in Middlesex County.[1]

His son [Alexander](/source/Alexander_Wilson_Smith) served in the Canadian House of Commons.[1] He died (supposedly) at McGillivray in 1897.[3]
