# James Pettifer

British academic, author and journalist (born 1949)

**James Pettifer** is a British academic, author and journalist who has specialised in [Balkan](/source/Balkan) affairs.

## Biography

He was born in 1949 in [Hereford](/source/Hereford) and was educated at [King's School](/source/The_King's_School%2C_Worcester), [Worcester](/source/Worcester%2C_England), and [Hertford College, Oxford](/source/Hertford_College%2C_Oxford).[1]

Pettifer has travelled extensively in [Greece](/source/Greece), [Turkey](/source/Turkey) and the Balkans and he has written several tourist guides to the region, including the *Blue Guide to Albania and Kosovo*, one of the few such guides to the area. In the media, he has reported mainly for *[The Times](/source/The_Times)* and *[The Wall Street Journal](/source/The_Wall_Street_Journal)* and he is a regular broadcaster and commentator on the Balkan countries on both radio and television.[2][3]

His expertise has been employed academically. He was a Senior Associate Member of [St Antony's College](/source/St_Antony's_College), Oxford, and a visiting professor in the Institute of Balkan Studies, in [Thessaloniki](/source/Thessaloniki).[1] He is currently teaching Balkan history at the [Oxford University Faculty of History](/source/University_of_Oxford).[4]
