# James McShane

**James McShane** (7 November 1833 – 14 December 1918) was a [Canadian](/source/Canadians) businessman and politician. He was [mayor of Montreal](/source/Mayor_of_Montreal), a member of the [Legislative Assembly of Quebec](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_Quebec), and a member of the [House of Commons of Canada](/source/House_of_Commons_of_Canada).

## Background

Born in [Montreal](/source/Montreal), the son of James McShane and Ellen Quinn, he worked as an exporter of livestock to England. He served as a volunteer in the [militia](/source/Militia) during the [Fenian raids](/source/Fenian_raids) in 1866.

## Montreal city politics

He represented the Sainte-Anne Ward on the [Montreal City Council](/source/Montreal_City_Council), from 1868 to 1873, 1874 to 1881 and from 1883 to 1887. From 1891 to 1893, he was the mayor of Montreal.

## Member of the Provincial Legislature

In 1873, he was defeated as the [Liberal Party of Quebec](/source/Liberal_Party_of_Quebec) candidate in a Quebec provincial by-election in the riding of [Montréal-Ouest](/source/Montr%C3%A9al-Ouest_(provincial_electoral_district)).[citation needed]

He was elected in the [1878 provincial election](/source/1878_Quebec_general_election) and re-elected in [1881](/source/1881_Quebec_general_election). He was elected in [Montréal-Centre](/source/Montr%C3%A9al-Centre_(provincial_electoral_district)) in [1886](/source/1886_Quebec_general_election), and in [Montréal division no. 6](/source/Montr%C3%A9al_division_no._6) in [1890](/source/1890_Quebec_general_election). From 1887 to 1888, he was commissioner of agriculture and public works in the cabinet of Premier [Honoré Mercier](/source/Honor%C3%A9_Mercier). He was defeated in the [1892 provincial election](/source/1892_Quebec_general_election).[citation needed]

## Federal politics

In 1895, he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in a by-election in the riding of [Montreal Centre](/source/Montreal_Centre). A [Liberal](/source/Liberal_Party_of_Canada), he was defeated in the [1896 federal election](/source/1896_Canadian_federal_election) in the riding of [St. Anne](/source/St._Anne_(electoral_district)).

## Retirement

After leaving politics, he was involved with the Montreal Harbour Commission and was harbour-master from 1900 to 1912. After his death in 1918, he was entombed at the [Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery](/source/Notre_Dame_des_Neiges_Cemetery) in Montreal.[1]
