Longmuir was born on 26 April 1907. He was educated at [Dalziel High School](/source/Dalziel_High_School), a [secondary school](/source/secondary_school) in [Motherwell](/source/Motherwell), [North Lanarkshire](/source/North_Lanarkshire), Scotland, and studied at the [University of Glasgow](/source/University_of_Glasgow).<ref>[''Who Was Who'' 1897-1990](/source/Who's_Who_(UK)) London, A & C Black, 1991 {{ISBN|071363457X}}</ref>

==Ordained ministry==
Longmuir was [ordained](/source/ordained) to [Swinton Parish](/source/Swinton%2C_Scottish_Borders) in 1934 where he served until 1952. During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), he served with the [Royal Army Chaplains' Department](/source/Royal_Army_Chaplains'_Department) and was awarded the [Territorial Decoration](/source/Territorial_Decoration).<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=44837|page=4481|date=29 April 1969}}</ref> After that he was [Minister](/source/Minister_(Christianity)) at [Chirnside](/source/Chirnside).
