**James Henry Coates** (November 27, 1829 – May 17, 1902) became the commanding officer of the [11th Illinois Infantry Regiment](/source/11th_Illinois_Infantry_Regiment) during the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War). Born in [Pennsylvania](/source/Pennsylvania), he became a [captain](/source/Captain_(armed_forces)) in the 11th Illinois in 1861. He fought at [Fort Donelson](/source/Battle_of_Fort_Donelson), [Shiloh](/source/Battle_of_Shiloh), [Riggins Hill](/source/Battle_of_Riggins_Hill), and in the [Vicksburg campaign](/source/Vicksburg_campaign). He rose in rank to [major](/source/Major_(rank)) and [lieutenant colonel](/source/Lieutenant_colonel) before being promoted [colonel](/source/Colonel) after the regiment's commander was killed at the [Siege of Vicksburg](/source/Siege_of_Vicksburg) in 1863. He led an expedition up the [Yazoo River](/source/Yazoo_River) which resulted in the [Battle of Yazoo City](/source/Battle_of_Yazoo_City) in March 1864. He led a brigade in [XVII Corps](/source/XVII_Corps_(Union_Army)) in the [Yazoo City expedition](/source/Yazoo_City_expedition) and his regiment in the [Mobile campaign](/source/Mobile_campaign_(1865)). He received the [brevet](/source/Brevet_(military)) rank of [brigadier general](/source/Brigadier_general) for war service on March 13, 1865.
