Promoted to [captain](/source/Captain_(Royal_Navy)) on 1 January 1886, Hammet became commanding officer of the [battleship](/source/battleship) [HMS ''Nile''](/source/HMS_Nile_(1888)) in November 1893, commanding officer of the battleship [HMS ''Sans Pareil''](/source/HMS_Sans_Pareil_(1887)) in February 1896 and Captain of the Portsmouth Fleet Reserve in January 1898.<ref>Service Record, The National Archives.
