**James Lawrence Buffington** (May 15, 1922, [Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania](/source/Jersey_Shore,_Pennsylvania) – July 20, 1981, [Englewood, New Jersey](/source/Englewood,_New_Jersey)) was an [American](/source/Americans) [jazz](/source/Jazz), studio, and classical [hornist](/source/French_horn).[1]

Buffington was a busy studio and jazz player on the [French horn](/source/French_horn). He was an [autodidact](/source/Autodidact) as a child, though his father played piano and trumpet. He graduated from the [Eastman School of Music](/source/Eastman_School_of_Music) and began playing in [New York City](/source/New_York_City) in the 1950s, with [Oscar Pettiford](/source/Oscar_Pettiford) among others. He played with [Mel Powell](/source/Mel_Powell) in 1954 and [Teddy Charles](/source/Teddy_Charles) in 1956.

He is perhaps best known for his work with [Miles Davis](/source/Miles_Davis) on some of his [Gil Evans](/source/Gil_Evans) sessions for [Columbia Records](/source/Columbia_Records).
