'''James Brien''' (February 4, 1848 — August 10, 1907) was a [politician](/source/politician) and [physician](/source/physician). He was elected to the [House of Commons of Canada](/source/House_of_Commons_of_Canada) in the 1887 election as a Member of the [Liberal Party](/source/Liberal_Party_of_Canada) to represent the [riding](/source/Electoral_district_(Canada)) of [Essex South](/source/Essex_South_(federal_electoral_district)). After his federal political career, he became [mayor](/source/mayor) of [Essex Centre, Ontario](/source/Essex_Centre%2C_Ontario), in 1895 for a term of eight years where he also served as a [reeve](/source/reeve_(Canada)) and a [councillor](/source/councillor) for three years. His cousin, [John Wesley Brien](/source/John_Wesley_Brien), was also a Member of the Canadian House of Commons.
