# James Boylen

**Matthew James Boylen** (August 10, 1907 – July 7, 1970) was a [Canadian](/source/Canadians) businessman and [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) [racehorse](/source/Horse_racing) owner.

Jim Boylen was born in [Weston](/source/Weston,_Toronto), [Ontario](/source/Ontario) and raised in Alberta. In his early teens he left home and returned to [Northern Ontario](/source/Northern_Ontario) where he and elder brother Fred eventually operated a [trading post](/source/Trading_post). By the time he was twenty years old, Boylen had become a full-time [prospector](/source/Prospecting) and in 1934 established business offices in the city of [Toronto](/source/Toronto). He would be the founder of [Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corp. Ltd](/source/Bathurst_Mining_Camp) in [Bathurst, New Brunswick](/source/Bathurst,_New_Brunswick), an operation later acquired by [Noranda](/source/Noranda_(mining_company)) which is now known as [Xstrata](/source/Xstrata).

An [art collector](/source/Art_collector), in 1959 Boylen was a founding donor to the [Beaverbrook Art Gallery](/source/Beaverbrook_Art_Gallery) in [Fredericton, New Brunswick](/source/Fredericton,_New_Brunswick), donating twenty-two paintings by [Cornelius Krieghoff](/source/Cornelius_Krieghoff).[1]

Boylen died at his Toronto home in 1970 and was buried in the city's [Mount Pleasant Cemetery](/source/Mount_Pleasant_Cemetery,_Toronto).

## Lanson Farm

During the 1950s and 1960s, Jim Boylen operated Lanson Farm in [Malton, Ontario](/source/Malton,_Ontario), a large [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) [racehorse](/source/Horse_racing) operation. He and brother Phil both were involved in the sport and famously passed on the opportunity to buy the great [Northern Dancer](/source/Northern_Dancer) when he was part of the [E. P. Taylor](/source/E._P._Taylor) annual yearling sale.

Lanson Farm won a number of important races in Canada as well as in the United States. Of their many successful horses, [Anita's Son](/source/Anita's_Son) was inducted in the [Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame](/source/Canadian_Horse_Racing_Hall_of_Fame).
