# James Arthur Pollock

**James Arthur Pollock**, [FRS](/source/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Society), (17 November 1865 – 24 May 1922) was an [Irish](/source/Ireland)-born [physicist](/source/Physicist), active in [Australia](/source/Australia).

Born in [Douglas](/source/Douglas,_Cork), [County Cork](/source/County_Cork), Ireland and educated in [England](/source/England), in 1885 Pollock moved to [Australia](/source/Australia) followed with by his family. In 1886, he was appointed second astronomical assistant to the [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales) government astronomer, [Henry Chamberlain Russell](/source/Henry_Chamberlain_Russell).[1][2]

In 1889 Pollock became professor of physics at the [University of Sydney](/source/University_of_Sydney). He studied atmospheric ions and [vacuum](/source/Vacuum) technology amongst other areas.[1]

In [World War I](/source/World_War_I), Pollock enlisted in the Engineering Corps and served with [Edgeworth David](/source/Edgeworth_David). Pollock designed apparatus for use in tunnelling. This enabled destruction of German fortifications on the [Messines](/source/Battle_of_Messines_(1917)) and Wytschaete ridges in [Belgium](/source/Belgium).[1] He finished the war with the rank of major.

Pollock died in [Sydney](/source/Sydney), he had no children. He was buried in [Waverley Cemetery](/source/Waverley_Cemetery).[1]
