# James Arrell

**James Lee Arrell** (November 7, 1888 – March 26, 1955) was an American [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player who played [prop](/source/Rugby_union_positions#Prop) for the [United States men's national team](/source/United_States_men's_national_rugby_union_team) in its [first capped match](/source/1912_Australia_rugby_union_tour_of_Canada_and_the_United_States) in 1912.[1]

## Biography

Arrell was born on November 7, 1888, in Wyandotte, Kansas, the son of Happer Samuel Arrell and Mary Eva Arrell (born Ege).[2] Arrell attended [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University) beginning in 1910,[2] where he played in the [front row](/source/Rugby_union_positions#Front_row) for the school's rugby team, ending the 1910 season with a record of seven wins and one loss.[3] While at Stanford, Arrell became a member of the Lambda Sigma chapter of the [Beta Theta Pi](/source/Beta_Theta_Pi) fraternity.[2]

On November 16, 1912, Arrell played for the United States national rugby union team at prop in its first capped match against [Australia](/source/Australia_national_rugby_union_team), a 12–8 loss.[4] This would be his only appearance for the United States in a test match.[1] In 1913, Arrell would also play rugby for [Olympic Club](/source/Olympic_Club_RFC) in [San Francisco, California](/source/San_Francisco,_California).[2] Arrell married Annie M. Holderman, and was the father of seven children.[2] He moved to [Abilene, Texas](/source/Abilene,_Texas), in 1930 and lived there until his death on March 26, 1955, at the age of 66.[1][2]
