# James Allen Johnson

**James Allen Johnson** (June 2, 1924 – July 20, 2016) was a [major general](/source/Major_general_(United_States)) in the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army) who served as Commandant of the [U.S. Army Engineer School](/source/United_States_Army_Engineer_School) at [Fort Belvoir](/source/Fort_Belvoir), and as Deputy Chief of Engineers.[1][2] He was awarded two [Distinguished Service Medals](/source/Distinguished_Service_Medal_(U.S._Army)), the [Silver Star](/source/Silver_Star), two [Legion of Merit](/source/Legion_of_Merit) decorations, two [Bronze Star Medals](/source/Bronze_Star_Medal), two [Purple Hearts](/source/Purple_Heart), the [Air Medal](/source/Air_Medal), the [Combat Infantryman's Badge](/source/Combat_Infantryman's_Badge), and the [Parachute Badge](/source/Parachute_Badge).[2][3][4][5]

Born in [Stoughton, Wisconsin](/source/Stoughton,_Wisconsin) to [Norwegian](/source/Norway) immigrant parents, Johnson graduated from [Stoughton High School](/source/Stoughton_High_School_(Wisconsin)) in 1942. After studying at the [University of Wisconsin](/source/University_of_Wisconsin) for one semester, he was drafted into the Army on March 12, 1943, during [World War II](/source/World_War_II). Johnson was appointed to the [United States Military Academy](/source/United_States_Military_Academy) and graduated with a B.S. degree after three years of study on June 3, 1947. After serving as a combat engineer in [Korea](/source/Korean_War), he earned an M.S. degree in industrial engineering from [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University) in 1957. Johnson later graduated from the [Army Command and General Staff College](/source/United_States_Army_Command_and_General_Staff_College) in 1961 and, after a tour of duty in [Vietnam](/source/Vietnam_War), the [Industrial College of the Armed Forces](/source/Dwight_D._Eisenhower_School_for_National_Security_and_Resource_Strategy) in 1966. His second tour of duty in Vietnam was as commanding general of the U.S. Army Engineer Command and Director of Construction for the [Military Assistance Command](/source/Military_Assistance_Command,_Vietnam).[5][6][7]

Johnson retired from active duty in August 1980 and settled in [Fairfax Station, Virginia](/source/Fairfax_Station,_Virginia). He died at Fort Belvoir and was buried in the [West Point Cemetery](/source/West_Point_Cemetery) on September 26, 2016.[5][8]
