**Nkrumah "Jah" Thomas** (born 1955, Kingston, Jamaica) is a [reggae](/source/Reggae) [deejay](/source/Deejay_(Jamaican)) and [record producer](/source/Record_producer) who first came to prominence in the 1970s, later setting up his own *Midnight Rock* and *Nura* labels.

## Biography

Named Nkrumah after [Ghanaian](/source/Ghanaian) nationalist leader [Kwame Nkrumah](/source/Kwame_Nkrumah), he adopted the stage name Jah Thomas and began deejaying in the mid-1970s, working with producers such as [Alvin Ranglin](/source/Alvin_Ranglin), who released his single "Midnight Rock", which topped the Jamaican chart in 1976.[1][2] Thomas's debut album, *Stop Yuh Loafin'* gained international recognition via a release on the newly formed [Greensleeves Records](/source/Greensleeves_Records) label.[1] Further deejay albums appeared in the late 1970s, before Thomas began concentrating on producing other artists, that included: [Robert Ffrench](/source/Robert_Ffrench), Anthony Johnson, [Triston Palma](/source/Triston_Palma), [Johnny Osbourne](/source/Johnny_Osbourne), [Michael Palmer](/source/Michael_Palmer_(musician)), [Barry Brown](/source/Barry_Brown_(singer)), [Barrington Levy](/source/Barrington_Levy), [Sugar Minott](/source/Sugar_Minott), [Early B](/source/Early_B), [Ranking Toyan](/source/Ranking_Toyan), and Robin Hood, at the same time setting up the *Midnight Rock* record label, one of the most successful performer-owned labels of the period.[1][2] Midnight Rock soon had a hit record in the shape of Thomas's "[Cricket Lovely Cricket](/source/Cricket_Lovely_Cricket)".[2] Thomas would often use the mixing talents of [Scientist](/source/Scientist_(musician)), and the [Roots Radics](/source/Roots_Radics) band.[2] He later also set up the *Nura* label.[2]

He is the father of reggae singer [Da'Ville](/source/Da'Ville) and singer/producer Dwight Thomas.[3]
