Military unit

**Royal Saxon Jagdstaffel 54**, commonly abbreviated to **Jasta 54**, was a "hunting group" (i.e., fighter squadron) of the *[Luftstreitkräfte](/source/Luftstreitkr%C3%A4fte)*, the air arm of the [Imperial German Army](/source/Imperial_German_Army) during [World War I](/source/World_War_I). The squadron would score over 20 aerial victories during the war, [including four observation balloons downed](/source/Balloon_buster). The unit's victories came at the expense of three pilots killed, and one injured in a flying accidents.[1]

## History

Jasta 54 was created on 1 January 1918 at *Flieger-Abteilung* ("Flier Detachment") 6, [Großenhain](/source/Gro%C3%9Fenhain), [Kingdom of Saxony](/source/Kingdom_of_Saxony). It went operational on 15 January. On the 19th, the new squadron joined [Jagdgruppe 10](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jagdgruppe_10&action=edit&redlink=1) as part of *[2 Armee](/source/2nd_Army_(German_Empire))*. On 17 March 1918, Jasta 54 scored its first aerial victories. It moved to support *[4 Armee](/source/4th_Army_(German_Empire))* in late March. On 6 June 1918, it returned to *2 Armee* even as the squadron joined [Jagdgruppe 9](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jagdgruppe_9&action=edit&redlink=1). On 10 July, it shifted to support *[3 Armee](/source/3rd_Army_(German_Empire))*. In August 1918, JG 9 transferred to *[18 Armee](/source/18th_Army_(German_Empire))*, whence Jasta 54 served through war's end.[1]
