It is located a few kilometers east of the city of [Acre](/source/Acre%2C_Israel) in the [Northern District](/source/Northern_District_(Israel)), [Israel](/source/Israel).

In 2024 its population was 20,231.[1]

## History

A flat bronze chandelier, featuring twelve candle holes, was found in Makr. It features an [Aramaic](/source/Aramaic) inscription along its entire circumference, as well as depictions of two [menorahs](/source/Temple_menorah), [lulavs](/source/Lulav), and [shofars](/source/Shofar), indicating a Jewish context. The text references [Kfar Hananya](/source/Kfar_Hananya), suggesting that the chandelier belongs to an ancient [synagogue](/source/Synagogue) that was located there. It is today in the [Musée royal de Mariemont](/source/Mus%C3%A9e_royal_de_Mariemont), [Morlanwelz](/source/Morlanwelz), [Belgium](/source/Belgium).[4]

### Crusaders

Arabic documents referring to the *[hudna](/source/Hudna)* (truce agreement) of 1283 between the [Crusaders](/source/Kingdom_of_Jerusalem) based in [Acre](/source/Acre%2C_Israel) and the [Mamluk](/source/Mamluk_Egypt) sultan [al-Mansur Qalawun](/source/Al-Mansur_Qalawun) are mentioning "Makr Harsin"[5] and "al-Hudeidah",[6] as part of the domain of the Crusaders, where "al-Hudeidah" represents modern Jadeidi.[5] "Makr Harsin" is either the original name of Makr, or, alternatively, it is possible that the text refers to two separate locations, Makr and Harsin, the latter remaining unidentified.[5]

### Ottoman Empire

Incorporated into the [Ottoman Empire](/source/Ottoman_Empire) in 1517, Makr appeared in the [census](/source/Defter) of 1596, located in the *[nahiya](/source/Nahiya)* (subdistrict) of Acre, part of [Safad Sanjak](/source/Safad_Sanjak). The population was 22 households and 3 bachelors, all [Muslim](/source/Muslim). They paid taxes on wheat, barley, summer crops, fruit trees, cotton, occasional revenues, goats and beehives; a total of 17,000 [akçe](/source/Ak%C3%A7e).[7][8] A map by [Pierre Jacotin](/source/Pierre_Jacotin) from [Napoleon's invasion of 1799](/source/French_campaign_in_Egypt_and_Syria) showed both places, named as "Makr" and "Sedid".[9]

In 1875 [Victor Guérin](/source/Victor_Gu%C3%A9rin) visited Makr, and found it to have 350 inhabitants, half Muslim and half "[Schismatic Greek](/source/Greek_Orthodox_Church_of_Jerusalem)".[10] He further noted that "In and about El Mekr are broken [columns](/source/Column), the fragment of an ancient [bas-relief](/source/Bas-relief), a little [sarcophagus](/source/Sarcophagus) in [terra cotta](/source/Terra_cotta), and several sepulchral caves."[11] He found Jadeidi to have 350 inhabitants.[12]

In 1881, the [PEF](/source/Palestine_Exploration_Fund)'s [*Survey of Western Palestine* (SWP)](/source/PEF_Survey_of_Palestine) described Jadeidi as "a village, built of stone, containing about eighty Moslems and twenty Christians, surrounded by olives and arable land, situated near the plain, .....with many [cisterns](/source/Cistern) for rain water to drink from."[13] Makr was described as "a village, built of stone, containing 100 Moslems and eighty Christians, situated at the edge of the plain, surrounded by olives and arable land; there are many cisterns for rain-water in the village."[14]

A population list from about 1887 showed that Jadeidi had about 245 inhabitants; half Muslim and half Greek Christians, while Makr had 280 inhabitants; one third Catholic and Greek Christians, two thirds Muslim.[15]

### British Mandate

In the [1922 census of Palestine](/source/1922_census_of_Palestine) conducted by the [British Mandate authorities](/source/Mandatory_Palestine) Jadeidi had a population of 204 residents; 108 Muslims and 96 Christians.[16] Of the Christians, 51 were Orthodox and 45 Greek Catholic ([Melchite](/source/Melkite)).[17] *Al Makr* had a population of 281; 206 Muslims and 75 Christians.[16] Of the Christians, 30 were Orthodox and 45 Greek Catholic (Melchite).[17] In the [1931 census](/source/1931_census_of_Palestine), Jadeidi had a population of 249; 146 Muslims and 103 Christians, in a total of 57 houses, while Makr had a population of 331; 257 Muslims and 74 Christians, in a total of 77 houses.[18]

In the [1945 statistics](/source/Village_Statistics%2C_1945) the population of Jadeidi was 280; 150 Muslims and 130 Christians,[19] who owned 5,219 [dunams](/source/Dunam) of land according to an official land and population survey.[20] 1,855 dunams were plantations and irrigable land, 2,202 dunams were used for cereals,[21] while 39 dunams were built-up (urban) land.[22]

The same year the population of Makr was 490; 390 [Muslims](/source/Muslims) and 100 [Christians](/source/Christians),[19] while 8,791 [dunams](/source/Dunam) of land belonged to the village according to the same official land and population survey.[20] 96 dunams were for citrus and bananas, 730 for plantations and irrigable land, 7,241 used for cereals,[23] while 26 dunams were built-up (urban) land.[24]

### Israel

Makr was captured by the Israeli army during the first part of [Operation Dekel](/source/Operation_Dekel), 8–14 July 1948,[25] and remained under [Martial Law](/source/Martial_law#Israel) until 1966. [Mahmoud Darwish](/source/Mahmoud_Darwish)'s family, who originated from the destroyed Arab village of [al-Birwa](/source/Al-Birwa), live in the town and Darwish was educated and raised there.[26]

## Sports

The town's main football team, [Hapoel Bnei Jadeidi F.C.](/source/Hapoel_Bnei_Jadeidi_F.C.), played in the Israeli [Liga Gimel](/source/Liga_Gimel) ([Israeli Fifth Division](/source/Israeli_football_league_system)) in 2011-2012.

## Transportation

In 2017, [Israel Railways](/source/Israel_Railways) proposed building an additional train station at Jadeidi-Makr on the [Railway to Karmiel](/source/Railway_to_Karmiel), although the dates for construction were not set.[27]
