Demierre studied at the [University of Geneva](/source/University_of_Geneva) at the {{ill|Conservatoire Populaire, Geneva|fr|Conservatoire populaire de musique, danse et théâtre de Genève|lt=Conservatoire Populaire}} (piano, jazz piano, [electroacoustic music](/source/electroacoustic_music)) and at the [Conservatoire de Musique de Genève](/source/Conservatoire_de_Musique_de_Gen%C3%A8ve) (music theory). Soon, he gave up the classic piano and tended to the [avant-garde](/source/avant-garde) rock and improvised jazz. As a pianist, he played with {{ill|Dorothea Schürch|de}}, [Radu Malfatti](/source/Radu_Malfatti), and also with [Martial Solal](/source/Martial_Solal), [Han Bennink](/source/Han_Bennink), [Joëlle Léandre](/source/Jo%C3%ABlle_L%C3%A9andre), [Carlos Zingaro](/source/Carlos_Zingaro) and [Ikue Mori](/source/Ikue_Mori). He performed regularly solo concerts and worked also in a trio with {{ill|Lucas Niggli|de}} and [Barry Guy](/source/Barry_Guy) and also with [Urs Leimgruber](/source/Urs_Leimgruber) and [Barre Phillips](/source/Barre_Phillips). Demierre changed his way as a composer to the border of jazz, free improvisation and contemporary music, because he was interested in mixing the improvised music tradition with notated music.
