**Jacob William Mahler** (born 10 April 2000) is a professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays either as a [defensive midfielder](/source/Midfielder#Defensive_midfielder) or [centre-back](/source/Defender_(association_football)#Centre-back) for [Singapore Premier League](/source/Singapore_Premier_League) club [Tampines Rovers](/source/Tampines_Rovers_FC). Born in Denmark, he represents the [Singapore national team](/source/Singapore_national_football_team).

## Club career

### Young Lions

A youth product of the [National Football Academy](/source/National_Football_Academy_(Singapore)) in Singapore, Mahler moved to [Young Lions](/source/Young_Lions_FC) in 2018.[1] Mahler made his professional debut for Young Lions in a 1–3 [Singapore Premier League](/source/Singapore_Premier_League) lost to [Geylang International](/source/Geylang_International_FC) on 4 July 2018.[2]

Mahler was named the club captain from the [2019 season](/source/2019_Singapore_Premier_League) onwards.[3]

### Madura United

On 19 May 2023, Mahler joined [Indonesia Liga 1](/source/Liga_1_(Indonesia)) club, [Madura United](/source/Madura_United_F.C.) becoming the 10th Singaporean to play in the Indonesian top-flight league.[4] On 23 July 2023, Mahler scored his first goal for the club against [Persis Solo](/source/Persis_Solo) coming from a set piece cross from [Francisco Rivera](/source/Francisco_Israel_Rivera).[5] Mahler was named in three consecutive "Team of the Week" from gameweek 4 to gameweek 6.

### Muangthong United

On 5 July 2024, Mahler moved to [Thai League 1](/source/Thai_League_1) club [Muangthong United](/source/Muangthong_United_F.C.). On 25 August, he made his debut for the club in a 2–0 win over [Ratchaburi](/source/Ratchaburi_F.C.). Mahler missed the entire season due to injuries.

### Tampines Rovers

On 29 June 2025, Mahler returned to Singapore to sign with [Tampines Rovers](/source/Tampines_Rovers_FC).

## International career

Mahler made his professional debut for the [Singapore national team](/source/Singapore_national_football_team) in a friendly 2–0 win over [Fiji](/source/Fiji_national_football_team) on 11 September 2018.[6] He scored his first goal for Singapore when he collected his second cap against [Cambodia](/source/Cambodia_national_football_team) on 16 October 2018 in an eventual 1–2 win.[7][8]

Mahler made his [AFF Championship](/source/AFF_Championship) debut in the [2018 campaign](/source/2018_AFF_Championship) on 9 November, with a 1–0 loss over [Philippines](/source/Philippines_national_football_team).[9][10]

In 2022, Mahler was called up the for [2021 SEA Games](/source/2021_SEA_Games) in [Hanoi](/source/Hanoi), [Vietnam](/source/Vietnam).[11] He was named captain but was later withdrawn from the team after he suffered an [anterior cruciate ligament](/source/Anterior_cruciate_ligament) tear during his club's match in the [2022 season](/source/2022_Singapore_Premier_League).[12]

After a five years absence, on 8 September 2023, Mahler made his return to the senior squad in the starting line up against [Tajikistan](/source/Tajikistan_national_football_team).

On 12 October 2023, Mahler scored his second international goal against [Guam](/source/Guam_national_football_team) in the [2026 FIFA World Cup qualification](/source/2026_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_%E2%80%93_AFC_first_round).[3]

On 21 March 2024, Mahler equalised the scoreline to 2–2 during the [2026 FIFA World Cup qualification](/source/2026_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_%E2%80%93_AFC_second_round) match against [China](/source/China_national_football_team).

## Personal life

Mahler was born in [Copenhagen](/source/Copenhagen), Denmark to a Danish father and Singaporean mother.[3] His family moved to [Jakarta](/source/Jakarta), [Indonesia](/source/Indonesia) due to his parents work but soon returned to Singapore when he was four.[3]

He attended [St. Joseph's Institution](/source/St._Joseph's_Institution,_Singapore) (SJI)[13] before graduating from [Temasek Polytechnic](/source/Temasek_Polytechnic) (TP) with a Diploma in Aerospace Electronics.[13]

Mahler is a big fan of [Manchester United](/source/Manchester_United_F.C.) and had cited that he used to emulate the playing style of his favourite player, [Paul Scholes](/source/Paul_Scholes).[3]
