**Jacob Johannes Taute** (born 21 March 1991) is a South African retired [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player. He played as a [fullback](/source/Rugby_union_positions#Full-back) or [centre](/source/Rugby_union_positions#Centre), he won three caps for [South Africa](/source/South_Africa_national_rugby_union_team). Taute played for the [Stormers](/source/Stormers) and the [Lions](/source/Lions_(United_Rugby_Championship)) in [Super Rugby](/source/Super_Rugby), the [Golden Lions](/source/Lions_(United_Rugby_Championship)) and [Western Province](/source/Stormers) in the [Currie Cup](/source/Currie_Cup), [Munster](/source/Munster_Rugby) in the [Pro14](/source/United_Rugby_Championship) and [Leicester Tigers](/source/Leicester_Tigers) in [Premiership Rugby](/source/Premiership_Rugby).

## Career

### South Africa

He was a member of the [South Africa Under 20 team](/source/South_Africa_national_under-20_rugby_union_team) that competed in the [2010](/source/2010_IRB_Junior_World_Championship) and [2011 IRB Junior World Championships](/source/2011_IRB_Junior_World_Championship). During the [2012 Rugby Championship](/source/2012_Rugby_Championship), Taute made his international debut for the [Springboks](/source/Springboks) against the [Wallabies](/source/Wallabies_(rugby_union)) at [Loftus Versfeld](/source/Loftus_Versfeld_Stadium). He was a late inclusion into the squad and played at [centre](/source/Rugby_union_positions#13._Centre) after [François Steyn](/source/Fran%C3%A7ois_Steyn) was ruled out with injury.[1][2]

### Munster

In September 2016, he joined Irish [Pro14](/source/United_Rugby_Championship) side [Munster](/source/Munster_Rugby) on a four-month contract as a replacement for the injured [Francis Saili](/source/Francis_Saili).[3][4] On 1 October 2016, Taute made his competitive debut for Munster in the [2016–17 Pro12](/source/2016%E2%80%9317_Pro12) fixture against [Zebre](/source/Zebre).[5] On 22 October 2016, Taute scored a try in Munster's 38–17 win against [Glasgow Warriors](/source/Glasgow_Warriors) in Round 2 of the [2016–17 European Rugby Champions Cup](/source/2016%E2%80%9317_European_Rugby_Champions_Cup), a match that was his European debut for the province.[6] On 10 December 2016, Taute scored two tries in Munster's 38–0 win against [Leicester Tigers](/source/Leicester_Tigers).[7]

On 2 January 2017, it was confirmed that Taute's contract with Munster had been extended until June 2017.[8] On 4 March 2017, Taute won the Man-of-the-Match award in Munster's 23–13 away win against [Cardiff Blues](/source/Cardiff_Blues) in [Cardiff Arms Park](/source/Cardiff_Arms_Park).[9] On 5 May 2017, Taute was named in the [2016–17 Pro12](/source/2016%E2%80%9317_Pro12) Dream Team.[10] On 19 May 2017, it was announced that Taute had signed a two-year contract with Munster which will see him remain with the province until June 2019.[11]

Taute suffered a knee ligament injury in Munster's [2017–18 Pro14](/source/2017%E2%80%9318_Pro14) fixture against [Cardiff Blues](/source/Cardiff_Blues) on 30 September 2017, ruling him out for six months.[12] He made his return from the injury in Munster's [2018–19 Pro14](/source/2018%E2%80%9319_Pro14) fixture against [Glasgow Warriors](/source/Glasgow_Warriors) on 7 September 2018, coming on as a replacement for [Rory Scannell](/source/Rory_Scannell) in the 63rd minute of the match.[13] Taute captained Munster for the first time in their fixture against [Ulster](/source/Ulster_Rugby) on 21 December 2018.[14]

### Leicester Tigers

Ahead of the 2019–20 season, Taute joined [Premiership Rugby](/source/Premiership_Rugby) side [Leicester Tigers](/source/Leicester_Tigers).[15] He made his Leicester debut in a [European Challenge Cup](/source/European_Rugby_Challenge_Cup) match as a substitute against [Pau](/source/Section_Paloise) on 16 November 2019, with his first start coming two weeks later against [Northampton Saints](/source/Northampton_Saints) in a [Premiership Rugby](/source/Premiership_Rugby) match. He extended his contract on 8 July 2020,[16] and captained the club twice in the 2020-21 season.[17]

Taute injured his knee in February 2021 and missed over a year of matches,[18] in his comeback match he lasted only 9 minutes before re-injuring his knee.[19]

On 1 July 2022 Taute announced his retirement from professional rugby.[20]
