For the English footballer, see [Jack Small (footballer)](/source/Jack_Small_(footballer)).

**John Small** (7 October 1765 – 21 January 1836)[1] was an English [cricketer](/source/Cricket) who played for the [Hambledon Club](/source/Hambledon_Club). He is also associated with [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_county_cricket_team_(pre-1864)), [Marylebone Cricket Club](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club), [Kent](/source/Kent_county_cricket_team_(pre-1843)) and [Surrey](/source/Surrey_county_cricket_team_(pre-1846)).[1]

Jack Small made his debut in 1784, his career continuing until 1811. He was noted as "a sound [batsman](/source/Batting_(cricket))" but should not be compared with his father [John Small senior](/source/John_Small_(cricketer)), who was still playing when Jack started.

Small played for the Players in the [inaugural and second](/source/List_of_Gentlemen_v_Players_matches) [Gentlemen v Players](/source/Gentlemen_v_Players) matches in 1806.[2][3]

He and [John Nyren](/source/John_Nyren) were close friends and Nyren always refers to Small junior as Jack Small. His younger brother, [Eli Small](/source/Eli_Small), played for Hampshire.
