Born in [Minneapolis](/source/Minneapolis), Sher wrote for several magazines, including the ''[Saturday Evening Post](/source/Saturday_Evening_Post),'' ''[Esquire](/source/Esquire_(magazine)),'' ''[Redbook](/source/Redbook),'' ''[Radio Mirror](/source/Radio_Mirror),'' ''[Reader's Digest](/source/Reader's_Digest),'' and ''[Collier's](/source/Collier's).'' He also had been a columnist for the ''New York Reporter'', and from 1937 to 1940 ''[Screen & Radio Weekly](/source/Screen_%26_Radio_Weekly),'' a nationally syndicated Sunday supplement published by the ''[Detroit Free Press](/source/Detroit_Free_Press).''<ref name="ConAu 1989" />

Sher wrote a number of films for [Audie Murphy](/source/Audie_Murphy), including in 1959, ''[The Wild and the Innocent](/source/The_Wild_and_the_Innocent),'' which he also directed.
