# Jack Sergeant

**John Iain Stephen Sergeant** (born 27 February 1995) is a Gibraltarian [footballer](/source/Association_football) who currently plays for [Illawarra Premier League](/source/Illawarra_Premier_League) side [Cringila Lions](/source/Cringila_Lions_FC) and the [Gibraltar national team](/source/Gibraltar_national_football_team), as a [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)).

## Club career

Sergeant appeared for [Sevilla FC](/source/Sevilla_FC)'s youth setup,[2] and had a stint with Atlético Zabal[3] before graduating from AD Taraguilla. In the 2013 summer, he moved to [Manchester 62](/source/Manchester_62_F.C.). In summer 2016 he moved to England to study a fire and rescue management degree at [Blackburn College](/source/Blackburn_College_(Blackburn_with_Darwen))[4] awarded by Lancaster University.[5]

On 17 August 2017 he signed for [Lincoln Red Imps](/source/Lincoln_Red_Imps_F.C.). On 30 October 2017, Sergeant signed for [West Didsbury & Chorlton](/source/West_Didsbury_%26_Chorlton_A.F.C.).[6] For his performances, in which he played 24 games for the club,[7] he was awarded Manager's Player of the Year in May 2018.[8] In July he briefly played for [Lincoln Red Imps](/source/Lincoln_Red_Imps_F.C.) for their [UEFA Europa League](/source/UEFA_Europa_League) campaign before completing his spell at West. During his final year at the club, he shared a house in [Hulme](/source/Hulme) with international and West teammate [Jamie Coombes](/source/Jamie_Coombes). After spending a season at [Europa](/source/Europa_F.C.) upon his return to the Rock, in July 2020 he re-signed for Lincoln.[9]

## International career

After appearing and captaining the [Gibraltar U19's](/source/Gibraltar_national_under-19_football_team),[10] Sergeant made his debut with the [full squad](/source/Gibraltar_national_football_team) on 19 November 2013, in a 0–0 draw against [Slovakia](/source/Slovakia_national_football_team).[11]

After being uncapped since 2016, when he moved to the UK, Sergeant returned to the national team in March 2018 for the friendly against [Latvia](/source/Latvia_national_football_team). He played the full game, getting booked late on, as Gibraltar held on for a historic 1–0 victory. In doing so, he also set a record as first [West Didsbury & Chorlton](/source/West_Didsbury_%26_Chorlton_A.F.C.) player to be capped while at the club in their 109-year history.[12] He captained the side for the first time in a 4–1 defeat to [Montenegro](/source/Montenegro_national_football_team) on 27 March 2021.[13]
