Middelburg became the second Dutchman to win the [Dutch TT](/source/1980_Dutch_TT) in [1980](/source/1980_Grand_Prix_motorcycle_racing_season), and in [1981](/source/1981_Grand_Prix_motorcycle_racing_season) he pulled off an unexpected upset when he defeated the defending world champion, [Kenny Roberts](/source/Kenny_Roberts), at the [British Grand Prix](/source/1981_British_motorcycle_Grand_Prix) at [Silverstone](/source/Silverstone_Circuit).[2] His British Grand Prix victory aboard a [Suzuki RG500](/source/Suzuki_RG_500_gamma) was the last time a [privateer](/source/Privateer_(motorsport)) competitor won a 500cc Grand Prix race, as motorcycle Grand Prix racing became increasingly professional during the 1980s.[3] His best years were in [1979](/source/1979_Grand_Prix_motorcycle_racing_season) and 1981, when he finished in seventh place in the 500cc world championships.[4]

He was rushed to hospital,[7] and died a day later.[8]
