# Jack Hewson

**John G. Hewson Sr.** (September 7, 1924 – June 26, 2012) was an American professional [basketball](/source/Basketball) player.[1]

## Early life and education

Hewson was raised in [Waldwick, New Jersey](/source/Waldwick,_New_Jersey) and attended [Ramsey High School](/source/Ramsey_High_School_(New_Jersey)). As part of the [V-12 Navy College Training Program](/source/V-12_Navy_College_Training_Program) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II), Hewson attended [Muhlenberg College](/source/Muhlenberg_College), [Bucknell College](/source/Bucknell_College) and [Temple University](/source/Temple_University).[2] He graduated from the [Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry](/source/Maurice_H._Kornberg_School_of_Dentistry) in 1948.

Hewson began his college career playing for [Doggie Julian](/source/Doggie_Julian) at [Muhlenberg](/source/Muhlenberg_Mules_men's_basketball) in 1942, while also playing football for the Mules. The next season, under the Navy's wartime V-5 training program, Hewson trained and competed for [Bucknell](/source/Bucknell_Bison) in both sports. After his training, he was sent to [Temple](/source/Temple_Owls) to become a Navy dentist and suited up for his third school in the two sports.[3]

Hewson played for the [Philadelphia Sphas](/source/Philadelphia_Sphas) of the [American Basketball League](/source/American_Basketball_League_(1925%E2%80%9355)) in the 1946–47 season before being selected in the [1947 BAA draft](/source/1947_BAA_draft) by the [Boston Celtics](/source/Boston_Celtics). He played for the Celtics during the [1947–48 season](/source/1947%E2%80%9348_BAA_season), appearing in 24 games and averaging 2.7 points.[1] Hewson spent the following three years of his career playing for the [Trenton Tigers](/source/Trenton_Tigers) and [Bridgeport Aer-A-Sols](/source/Bridgeport_Aer-A-Sols) of the American Basketball League, and the [Pottsville Packers](/source/Pottsville_Packers) and [Berwick Carbuilders](/source/Berwick_Carbuilders) of the [Continental Basketball Association](/source/Continental_Basketball_Association).

From 1949 to 1952, Hewson served in the United States Army Medical Corps and deployed to Europe as part of the occupation after [World War II](/source/World_War_II). During this time, he coached and played basketball. He became a captain.[4]
