# Jack Barley

**Jack Charles Barley** (4 December 1887 – 26 October 1956) was an English [cricketer](/source/Cricket) and a [British](/source/United_Kingdom) [Colonial Service](/source/Colonial_Service) administrator. A right-handed batsman and [wicket-keeper](/source/Wicket-keeper), he played four [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) matches, all for different teams. He scored 12 runs in eight innings and made five dismissals: one stumping and four catches.

## Cricket career

His debut came for [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County_Cricket_Club) against [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) in 1908; he had a quiet match, taking only one catch and scoring 0 and 1 with the bat. The following year he played for [HDG Leveson-Gower](/source/HDG_Leveson-Gower)'s XI against [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University_Cricket_Club), for [Worcestershire](/source/Worcestershire_County_Cricket_Club) against the same opposition, and finally *for* Oxford University against [Surrey](/source/Surrey_County_Cricket_Club).[1]

Barley has one minor claim to fame: he shared in Worcestershire's record eleventh-wicket partnership – albeit one of just 9 – with [Maurice Jewell](/source/Maurice_Jewell) in their 12-a-side match against Oxford University.

## Colonial administrator

He joined the administration of the [British Western Pacific Territories](/source/British_Western_Pacific_Territories) after leaving [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University) in 1911.[2] Barley was appointed to work in the civil service in the [Solomon Islands](/source/Solomon_Islands), as District Officer at [Tulagi](/source/Tulagi), before succeeding [Arthur Grimble](/source/Arthur_Grimble) as the British [Resident Commissioner](/source/Governor_of_the_Gilbert_and_Ellice_Islands) in the [Gilbert and Ellice Islands](/source/Gilbert_and_Ellice_Islands) from 18 October 1933.[3] Barley's tenure ended officially in December 1941 following the [Japanese occupation of the Gilbert Islands](/source/Japanese_occupation_of_the_Gilbert_Islands), however [Ronald Garvey](/source/Ronald_Garvey) had replaced him as Acting Resident Commissioner from 1938 to 1939.[4] Then [Cyril George Fox Cartwright](/source/Cyril_Cartwright_(civil_servant)) was acting Resident Commissioner until [Vivian Fox-Strangways](/source/Vivian_Fox-Strangways) took up his appointment as Resident Commissioner.[4]

Barley died at [Surfers Paradise](/source/Surfers_Paradise,_Queensland), [Queensland](/source/Queensland), [Australia](/source/Australia) on 26 October 1956.
