''Jacforus cavatus'' was [first described](/source/species_description) by [Mary J. Rathbun](/source/Mary_J._Rathbun) in 1907 as ''Cycloxanthus cavatus''.<ref name="NgClark" /> It was described again by [Charles Howard Edmondson](/source/Charles_Howard_Edmondson) in 1925 as ''Euxanthus minutus'', and again by Edmondson in 1931 as ''Megametope sulcatus'', both of which are [junior](/source/junior_synonym) [subjective (heterotypic) synonyms](/source/subjective_synonym).<ref name="NgClark" /> The affinites of Rathbun's species with other genera have also been unclear;<ref name="NgClark" /> its apparent affinities with the genus ''[Medaeus](/source/Medaeus)'' are superficial.<ref name="NgClark" /> When Danièle Guinot split the genus ''[Cycloxanthops](/source/Cycloxanthops)'' in 1968, creating the new genus ''[Neoxanthops](/source/Neoxanthops)'', ''C.&nbsp;cavatus'' was not explicitly placed in either genus.<ref name="NgClark" /> A new genus, ''Jacforus'', was erected in 2003, commemorating [Jacques Forest](/source/Jacques_Forest),<ref name="NgClark" /> and containing only ''J.&nbsp;cavatus''.<ref name="Ng">{{cite journal |journal=[Raffles Bulletin of Zoology](/source/Raffles_Bulletin_of_Zoology) |year=2008 |volume=17 |pages=1–286 |title=Systema Brachyurorum: Part I.
