The species are [shrub](/source/shrub)s to large [tree](/source/tree)s ranging in size from {{convert|20|to|30|m|ft|abbr=on}} tall. Most of its species have [bipinnate](/source/bipinnate) [leaves](/source/leaf), leaves on the rest are pinnate or simple. Jacaranda [flower](/source/flower)s are produced in conspicuous large [panicle](/source/panicle)s, each flower with a five-lobed blue to purple-blue [corolla](/source/Corolla_(flower)); a few species have white flowers. Flowers of this genus's species differ from other genera in their family by having [staminode](/source/staminode)s longer than the [stamen](/source/stamen)s that not only make the flowers more visually interesting to pollinators like [orchid bees](/source/Euglossini), but also have [glandular trichome](/source/trichome)s secreting plant metabolites that attract those bees.<ref name="PotNtJ"/>{{rp|1590}} Jacaranda flowers also have tricolpate [pollen](/source/pollen), and a [chromosome](/source/chromosome) number of 18.{{cn |date=April 2026}}

The genus is divided into two sections, sect. ''Monolobos'' and sect. ''Dilobos'' DC., based on the number of [theca](/source/theca)e on the [anther](/source/anther)s. Sect. ''Monolobos'' has 18 species and is found primarily in western [South America](/source/South_America), [Central America](/source/Central_America), [Mexico](/source/Mexico), and the [Caribbean](/source/Caribbean). Sect. ''Dilobos'', which is believed to be the primitive form, has 31 species and is found primarily in southeastern [Brazil](/source/Brazil) including the [Paraná River](/source/Paran%C3%A1_River) valley. The anatomy of the [wood](/source/wood) in the two sections also differs. Although usually treated in sect. ''Monolobos'', ''J.&nbsp;copaia'' differs somewhat from all other members of the genus and may be intermediate between the two sections (Dos Santos & Miller 1997).

Jacaranda can be propagated from grafting, cuttings, and seeds, though plants grown from seeds take a long time to bloom. This genus thrives in full sun and sandy soils, which explains their abundance in warmer climates. Mature plants can survive in colder climates down to {{convert|-7|C|F}}; however, they may not bloom as profusely. Younger plants are more fragile and may not survive in colder climates when temperatures drop below freezing.

Several species are widely grown as [ornamental plant](/source/ornamental_plant)s throughout the subtropical regions of the world, valued for their intense flower displays. The most often seen is the [blue jacaranda](/source/blue_jacaranda) (''Jacaranda mimosifolia''; [syn.](/source/synonym_(taxonomy)) ''J. acutifolia'' hort. non Bonpl.). Other members of the genus are also commercially important; for example the [Copaia](/source/Jacaranda_copaia) (''Jacaranda copaia'') is important for its [timber](/source/timber) because of its exceptionally long [bole](/source/Bole_(botany)).
