**Phillipus Jacobus Snyman 'JP' du Plessis** (born 29 April 1991) is a South African professional [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player who plays centre position for the [New Orleans Gold](/source/New_Orleans_Gold) of [Major League Rugby](/source/Major_League_Rugby) (MLR) in the U.S.

Du Plessis previously played for the [San Diego Legion](/source/San_Diego_Legion) in the MLR.[2][3][4]

Du Plessis also played [rugby league](/source/Rugby_league) for the [Sydney Roosters](/source/Sydney_Roosters) and [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) for [Super Rugby](/source/Super_Rugby) sides the [Melbourne Rebels](/source/Melbourne_Rebels) and the [Stormers](/source/Stormers), as well as South African [Currie Cup](/source/Currie_Cup) sides [Western Province](/source/Stormers) and [Free State Cheetahs](/source/Cheetahs_(rugby_union)) and French [Top 14](/source/Top_14) side [Montpellier](/source/Montpellier_H%C3%A9rault_Rugby).

## Early years

Du Plessis grew up playing rugby union in [South Africa](/source/South_Africa) starting his career as school pupil at Reitz High School in [Reitz](/source/Reitz%2C_Free_State)[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] and later moving to [Paul Roos Gymnasium](/source/Paul_Roos_Gymnasium) in [Stellenbosch](/source/Stellenbosch). He was selected to represent [Western Province](/source/Stormers) at the Under-16 Grant Khomo Week tournament in 2007 and represented them at the premier high school rugby union competition in South Africa, the Under-18 [Craven Week](/source/Craven_Week), in 2009. After that event, he was also named in the 2009 [South African Schools](/source/South_Africa_national_under-18_rugby_union_team) squad. He played off the bench in their 86–3 against [Italy](/source/Italy_national_under-18_rugby_union_team)[5] and scored South Africa's only try in their 13–45 defeat by [England](/source/England_national_under-18_rugby_union_team) three days later.[6]

## Rugby league

Du Plessis was then one of two South African youngsters that moved to Australia to join [rugby league](/source/Rugby_league) side the [Sydney Roosters](/source/Sydney_Roosters), the other being [Brian Skosana](/source/Brian_Skosana).[7][8] He never played for the first team, but did represent their Under-20 side in the [2010 Toyota Cup](/source/2010_NRL_Under-20s_season).

## Rugby union

### Melbourne Rebels

In 2010, Du Plessis reverted to rugby union, signing with the [Rebels](/source/Melbourne_Rebels) [Super Rugby](/source/Super_Rugby) side for their inaugural season in Super Rugby in [2011](/source/2011_Super_Rugby_season).[9][10] He made a single Super Rugby appearance for the Rebels, coming on as a late replacement in their match against the [Hurricanes](/source/Hurricanes_(rugby_union)).[11]

### Western Province / Stormers

Du Plessis returned to [South Africa](/source/South_Africa) in 2011 to sign for the [Cape Town](/source/Cape_Town)-based [Western Province](/source/Stormers). He made seven appearances for the [Western Province U21](/source/Stormers) side during the [2011 Under-21 Provincial Championship](/source/2011_Under-21_Provincial_Championship), scoring five tries which included four in their 38–42 loss to the [Golden Lions U21s](/source/Lions_(United_Rugby_Championship)) in [Johannesburg](/source/Johannesburg).[12]

Du Plessis was included in the [Stormers](/source/Stormers)' [2012 Super Rugby](/source/2012_Super_Rugby_season) squad. He made two appearances for them off the bench, a 23–13 victory over the [Reds](/source/Queensland_Reds) in [Brisbane](/source/Brisbane)[13] and a 17–3 victory over the [Force](/source/Western_Force) in [Perth](/source/Perth) a week later.[14] He also made seven appearances for Western Province in the [2012 Vodacom Cup](/source/2012_Vodacom_Cup) and scored a try against the [Eastern Province Kings](/source/Eastern_Province_Elephants).[15]

Still eligible for play at Under-21 level, he played for the [Western Province U21](/source/Stormers) side during the [2012 Under-21 Provincial Championship](/source/2012_Under-21_Provincial_Championship) and scored one try in their match against the [Leopards U21](/source/Leopards_(rugby_union)).[16] He was then called up to their [Currie Cup](/source/Currie_Cup) side and made nine appearances for them during the [2012 Currie Cup Premier Division](/source/2012_Currie_Cup_Premier_Division). He scored tries in their matches against [Griquas](/source/Griquas_(rugby_union))[17] and the [Blue Bulls](/source/Bulls_(rugby_union)) to help them finish in third spot on the log to qualify for the semi-finals. However, he didn't feature in the semi-final or the final (which Western Province won by beating the [Sharks](/source/Sharks_(rugby_union)) 25–18)[18] instead reverting to the Under-21 side; he played in both their 19–18 semi-final victory over the [Sharks U21](/source/Sharks_(rugby_union))[19] and their 13–22 defeat by the [Blue Bulls U21](/source/Bulls_(rugby_union)) in the final.[20]

### Montpellier

He didn't feature for the Stormers in the [2013 Super Rugby season](/source/2013_Super_Rugby_season) and opted to move to [France](/source/France) to join [Top 14](/source/Top_14) side [Montpellier](/source/Montpellier_H%C3%A9rault_Rugby) prior to the [2013–14 Top 14 season](/source/2013%E2%80%9314_Top_14_season).[21] However, he failed to break into the first team at Montpellier due to suffering a knee injury and featured in just one match for them, coming on as a late replacement in a 25–18 victory over [Grenoble](/source/FC_Grenoble_Rugby).[22]

### Free State Cheetahs

He returned from France after just one season to join the [Free State Cheetahs](/source/Cheetahs_(rugby_union)) prior to the [2014 Currie Cup Premier Division](/source/2014_Currie_Cup_Premier_Division).[23] He made five starts and five appearances off the bench for the [Bloemfontein](/source/Bloemfontein)-based side, scoring a try in their match against the [Pumas](/source/Pumas_(Currie_Cup))[24] as the Free State Cheetahs finished in fifth spot to miss out on the play-offs.

He wasn't named in the [Cheetahs](/source/Cheetahs_(rugby_union)) [Super Rugby](/source/Super_Rugby) squad for the [2015 Super Rugby season](/source/2015_Super_Rugby_season),[25] instead playing in four matches for the [Free State XV](/source/Cheetahs_(rugby_union)) side that played in the [2015 Vodacom Cup](/source/2015_Vodacom_Cup) competition.

### Eastern Province Kings

Du Plessis was named in the [Griquas](/source/Griquas_(rugby_union)) squad for the [2015 Currie Cup qualification](/source/2015_Currie_Cup_qualification) tournament,[26] but didn't feature for them at all, instead joining [Port Elizabeth](/source/Port_Elizabeth)-based side [Eastern Province Kings](/source/Eastern_Province_Elephants) prior to the [2015 Currie Cup Premier Division](/source/2015_Currie_Cup_Premier_Division) season.[27]
