The **J/111** is an American [sailboat](/source/Sailboat) that was designed by [Alan Johnstone](/source/Alan_Johnstone_(naval_architect)) as a [one-design](/source/One-design) [racer](/source/Sailing_(sport))-[cruiser](/source/Cruising_(maritime)) and first built in 2010. The boat is named for its [length overall](/source/Length_overall) in [decimeters](/source/Decimeter).[1][2][3][4][5][6]

The design is a [World Sailing](/source/World_Sailing) international class [keelboat](/source/Keelboat).[7]

## Production

The design has been built by [J/Boats](/source/J/Boats) in the United States, since 2010 and remains in production.[1][2][8][9]

## Design

The J/111 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of [fiberglass](/source/Fiberglass). Construction is glass reinforced polyester and a balsa fiberglass vinylester sandwich via [vacuum bag molding](/source/Vacuum_bag_molding). It has a [fractional](/source/Fractional_rig) [sloop](/source/Sloop) rig with a keel-stepped [carbon fiber](/source/Carbon_fiber) mast with two sets of swept [spreaders](/source/Spreader_(sailboat)), an [aluminum](/source/Aluminum) [boom](/source/Boom_(sailing)) and steel rod rigging. It has a retractable [bowsprit](/source/Bowsprit), a [plumb stem](/source/Plumb_stem), an open and sightly [reverse transom](/source/Reverse_transom), an internally mounted spade-type [rudder](/source/Rudder) controlled by a [wheel](/source/Ship's_wheel) and a fixed [cast iron](/source/Cast_iron), fin [keel](/source/Keel) with a weighted lead bulb. It displaces 9,370 lb (4,250 kg) and carries 3,516 lb (1,595 kg) of ballast.[1][2][5]

The boat has a draft of 7.18 ft (2.19 m) with the standard keel.[1][2]

The boat is fitted with a Swedish [Volvo](/source/Volvo) D1-20 [diesel engine](/source/Diesel_engine) of 18 hp (13 kW) for docking and maneuvering. The fuel tank holds 13 US gallons (49 L) and the fresh water tank has a capacity of 26.4 US gallons (100 L). The holding tank is 11.9 US gallons (45 L)[1][2][5]

The design has sleeping accommodation for six to eight people, with a double ["V"-berth](/source/%22V%22-berth) in the bow cabin, two straight settee berths in the main cabin around a folding table, two aft [quarter berths](/source/Quarter_berth), plus two optional fold-up sea-berths. The [galley](/source/Galley_(kitchen)) is located on the port side at the [companionway](/source/Companionway) ladder. The galley is L-shaped and is equipped with a two-burner stove and a sink. A navigation station is opposite the galley, on the starboard side. The enclosed [head](/source/Head_(watercraft)) is located just aft of the bow cabin on the port side. Cabin head room is 70 in (180 cm).[1][2][6][5]

For sailing downwind the design may be equipped with an asymmetrical [spinnaker](/source/Spinnaker) of 1,399 sq ft (130.0 m2), flown from the retractable bowsprit.[1][2][5]

The boat is supported by an active class club that organizes racing events, the *J/111 Class Association*.[10]
