**Izharul Islam Chowdhury** ([Bengali](/source/Bengali_language): মুফতি ইজহারুল ইসলাম) is the founder of [Jamiatul Uloom Al-Islamia Lalkhan Bazar](/source/Jamiatul_Uloom_Al-Islamia_Lalkhan_Bazar).[1][2][3] He is the present executive president of [Nizam-e-Islam Party](/source/Nizam-e-Islam_Party)[4][5] and Nayeb-e-Ameer of [Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh](/source/Hefazat-e-Islam_Bangladesh).[6][7]

## Early life and education

Chowdhury studied at [Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam](/source/Al-Jamiatul_Ahlia_Darul_Ulum_Moinul_Islam) and [Al-Jamiah Al-Islamiah Patiya](/source/Al-Jamiah_Al-Islamiah_Patiya).[8]

## Career

In 1992, Chowdhury was a founding leader of the [Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh](/source/Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami_Bangladesh), an Islamist terrorist organization.[9] In 2011, he was placed in remand over his links to banned Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami.[10]

Chowdhury serves as the director of his madrasa [Jamiatul Uloom Al-Islamia Lalkhan Bazar](/source/Jamiatul_Uloom_Al-Islamia_Lalkhan_Bazar).[8] A [bomb explosion](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lalkhan_Bazar_madrasa_blast&action=edit&redlink=1) took place at the dorm of the Madrassah, killing three on 7 October 2013.[11] Police recovered bomb-making equipment from the room and crude explosives.[12] Police filed charges against Chowdhury, his son Harun Izhar, and seven others.[11][13] An arrest warrant was issued against him in March 2014.[11] He was sent to jail in August 2015.[12]

In March 2022, Chowdhury was sentenced to two years imprisonment for submitting a wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission.[14]
