**Ithaque** (French: [\[i.tak\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/French); [French](/source/French_language) for "[Ithaca](/source/Ithaca_(island))") was one of three short-lived [French departments of Greece](/source/French_departments_of_Greece).

## History

It came into existence after [Napoleon](/source/Napoleon)'s [conquest](/source/Fall_of_the_Republic_of_Venice) in 1797 of the [Republic of Venice](/source/Republic_of_Venice), when Venetian Greek possessions such as the [Ionian Islands](/source/Ionian_Islands) fell to the [French Directory](/source/French_Directory). It included the islands of [Ithaca](/source/Ithaca_(island)), [Cephalonia](/source/Cephalonia) and [Lefkada](/source/Lefkada), as well as the cities of [Preveza](/source/Preveza), [Arta](/source/Arta%2C_Greece) and [Vonitsa](/source/Vonitsa) on the adjacent mainland. Its prefecture was at [Argostoli](/source/Argostoli) on Cephalonia. The islands were lost to [Russia](/source/Russian_Empire) in 1798 and the department was officially disbanded in 1802. Also Preveza, Arta and Vonitsa were [captured in 1798](/source/Battle_of_Nicopolis_(1798)) by [Ali Pasha](/source/Ali_Pasha_of_Ioannina), ruler of the [Pashalik of Yanina](/source/Pashalik_of_Yanina).

During the [renewed French control of the area in 1807–1809](/source/French_rule_in_the_Ionian_Islands_(1807%E2%80%931814)), the department was not re-established, the constitutional form of the [Septinsular Republic](/source/Septinsular_Republic) being kept.
