The **Italian Civil Code** ([Italian](/source/Italian_language): *Codice civile*) is the [civil code](/source/Civil_code) of Italy, a collection of norms regulating [private law](/source/Private_law).[1] It was enacted under [Fascist rule](/source/Fascist_Italy_(1922%E2%80%931943)), by [Royal decree](/source/Royal_decree) no. 262 of 16 March 1942. It predates the current [Italian Constitution](/source/Constitution_of_Italy), and it was amended in the postwar period.[1] The 1942 civil code replaced an earlier civil code which was in force since 1865, the latter being essentially an Italian translation of the [Napoleonic Code](/source/Code_Napoleon).[1] Some parts of the 1942 code are based on the [German Civil Code](/source/German_Civil_Code) of 1900.
