**Maria Isabel Coelho Santos** (born 12 February 1968)[1] is a Portuguese politician of the [Socialist Party](/source/Socialist_Party_(Portugal)) who was a [Member of the European Parliament](/source/Member_of_the_European_Parliament).

## Political career

### Member of the Portuguese Parliament

Santos was a member of the [Assembly of the Republic](/source/Assembly_of_the_Republic_(Portugal)) from 2015 until 2019 and from 2005 until 2011.[2] During her time in parliament, she served on the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

In addition to her committee assignments, Santos was a member of the Portuguese delegation to the [Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe](/source/Parliamentary_Assembly_of_the_Organization_for_Security_and_Co-operation_in_Europe). In this capacity, she served as the Assembly's vice-chair and led several [election monitoring](/source/Election_monitoring) missions, including for the [2017 elections](/source/2017_German_federal_election) in Germany[3] and the [2018 midterm elections](/source/2018_United_States_elections) in the United States.[4][5]

### Member of the European Parliament

Since becoming a [Member of the European Parliament](/source/Member_of_the_European_Parliament), Santos has been serving on the [Committee on Foreign Affairs](/source/European_Parliament_Committee_on_Foreign_Affairs) and of its [Subcommittee on Human Rights](/source/Subcommittee_on_Human_Rights). She is also a member of the Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG), which oversees the Parliament's election observation missions.[6]

In addition to her committee assignments, Santos chairs the parliament's delegation for relations with the [Mashriq](/source/Mashriq) countries and is a member of the delegation to the [Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly](/source/Euro-Latin_American_Parliamentary_Assembly). She is also part of the European Parliament Intergroup on Anti-Racism and Diversity[7] and the [European Parliament Intergroup on LGBT Rights](/source/European_Parliament_Intergroup_on_LGBT_Rights).[8]
