She has since interpreted and recorded the songs of some of the most famous Latin American folk singers. ## Career After the [11 September 1973 Chilean coup d'état](/source/1973_Chilean_coup_d'%C3%A9tat) she lived in exile in Argentina and France for many years. She returned to Chile when democracy returned to her country.[1] Parra has toured extensively during her career and was a distinctive figure in the [Nueva Canción Chilena](/source/Nueva_Canci%C3%B3n#Chile_(Nueva_Canción_Chilena_(New_Chilean_Song))) (New Chilean Song) movement.
