# Isaac Cole

**Isaac Cole** (9 April 1886 – 30 March 1940) was an English [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) and professional [rugby league](/source/Rugby_league) footballer who played in the 1900s and 1910s. He played club level rugby union (RU) for [Castleford](http://castlefordrufc.org/), and representative level rugby league (RL) for [England](/source/England_national_rugby_league_team) and [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire_rugby_league_team), and at club level for [Castleford](/source/Castleford_RFC_(1896)),[2] [Huddersfield](/source/Huddersfield_Giants), [Wakefield Trinity](/source/Wakefield_Trinity), ([York](/source/York_Wasps) and [Halifax](/source/Halifax_R.L.F.C.) during [World War I](/source/World_War_I)) and [Keighley](/source/Keighley_Cougars) playing mainly in the [forwards](/source/Rugby_league_positions#Forwards), though occasionally on the .[3]

## Background

Cole was born in [Pontefract](/source/Pontefract), [West Riding of Yorkshire](/source/West_Riding_of_Yorkshire), England, and he died aged 53 in [Halifax](/source/Halifax,_West_Yorkshire), [West Riding of Yorkshire](/source/West_Riding_of_Yorkshire), England.[4]

## Playing career

### Club career

Cole scored six tries playing on the wing for [Huddersfield](/source/Huddersfield_Giants) on 30 January 1907 in the 63–0 victory over [Liverpool City](/source/Liverpool_City_(1906)). He played for [Huddersfield](/source/Huddersfield_Giants) in the 8–19 defeat by [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand_national_rugby_league_team) on Saturday 12 October 1907.[5]

Cole didn't play in [Huddersfield](/source/Huddersfield_Giants)'s 21–0 victory over [Batley](/source/Batley_Bulldogs) in the [1909 Yorkshire Cup](/source/1909_Yorkshire_Cup) Final during the [1909–10 season](/source/1909%E2%80%9310_Northern_Rugby_Football_Union_season) at [Headingley](/source/Headingley_Rugby_Stadium), [Leeds](/source/Leeds) on Saturday 27 November 1909, in front of a crowd of 22,000,[6]

Upon signing for Wakefield Trinity on 1 February 1910,[7] the game against [Rochdale Hornets](/source/Rochdale_Hornets) was cancelled due to the weather, resulting in them being unable to qualify him for the cup ties,[8] although he did receive a [Yorkshire League](/source/RFL_Yorkshire_League) winners medal during the [1910–11 season](/source/1910%E2%80%9311_Northern_Rugby_Football_Union_season).

In the benefit match played for [Ernest Whitehouse](/source/Ernest_Whitehouse), on 21 December 1919, Isaac Cole played for the defeated [Billy Batten](/source/Billy_Batten) XIII versus [Halifax](/source/Halifax_R.L.F.C.) by 6–16. Ernest Whitehouse was a [World War I](/source/World_War_I) leg [amputee](/source/Amputation) who had played for Whitwood Melbourne (RU), [Castleford](/source/Castleford_RFC_(1896)) (1912), been registered with [Hull F.C.](/source/Hull_F.C.) (28 January 1913 – 1916) and played for [York](/source/York_Wasps) and [Halifax](/source/Halifax_R.L.F.C.) in 1917–18. The benefit match was the first rugby league game to be played at [Wheldon Road](/source/The_Jungle_(Wheldon_Road)), [Castleford](/source/Castleford).

### Representative honours

Cole won a [cap](/source/Cap_(sport)) for [England](/source/England_national_rugby_league_team) (RL) while at [Castleford](/source/Castleford_RFC_(1896)) in 1906 in the 3–3 draw with [Other Nationalities](/source/Other_Nationalities_rugby_league_team) on Monday 1 January 1906 at [Central Park](/source/Central_Park_(Wigan)), [Wigan](/source/Wigan).

This game was the last 15-a-side rugby league international to be played, and 'Cole at 19 years and eight months old, was thought to have been the youngest forward of either code to have played at international level up to that time'.[9]

In Yorkshire trial games, Isaac Cole played for "The Stripes" in the 8–13 defeat by "The Whites" at [Huddersfield](/source/Huddersfield) on Monday 25 September 1905, and "The Possibles" in the 18–15 victory over "The Probables" at [Hull](/source/Kingston_upon_Hull) on Tuesday 10 October 1905.

Cole won one cap for [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire_rugby_league_team) in the 0–8 defeat by [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire_rugby_league_team) at [Hull](/source/Kingston_upon_Hull) on Saturday 4 November 1905, while at [Castleford](/source/Castleford_RFC_(1896)).

He was also selected as reserve for [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire_rugby_league_team) against [Cumberland](/source/Cumberland_rugby_league_team) for the game at [Whitehaven](/source/Whitehaven) on Saturday 13 January 1906.
