# Isaac Choy

**Isaac William Choy**[1] is an American politician and a former [Democratic](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) member of the [Hawaii House of Representatives](/source/Hawaii_House_of_Representatives) representing District 23 from November 2012 to November 2018.[2] Choy consecutively served from 2008 until 2012 in the District 24 seat.

In 2020, Choy was appointed to serve as director of the state Department of Taxation.[3]

## Education

Choy earned his [BS](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) in [business administration](/source/Business_administration) from [San Jose State University](/source/San_Jose_State_University).

## Elections

- 2012 Redistricted to District 23, and with Democratic Representative [Tom Brower](/source/Tom_Brower) redistricted to District 22, Choy and his 2010 [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) challenger Zach Thompson were both unopposed for their August 11, 2012 primaries,[4] setting up a rematch; Choy won the November 6, 2012 General election with 7,502 votes (71.9%) against Thompson.[5]
- 2008 When Democratic Representative [Kirk Caldwell](/source/Kirk_Caldwell) retired from the Legislature to [run for mayor of Honolulu](/source/Honolulu_mayoral_election,_2010) and left the District 24 seat open, Choy was unopposed for the September 20, 2008 Democratic Primary, winning with 3,021 votes,[6] and won the November 4, 2008 General election with 6,689 votes (62.4%) against Republican nominee Jerilyn Jeffryes.[7]
- 2010 Choy won the September 18, 2010 Democratic Primary with 3,658 votes (53.8%),[8] and won the November 2, 2010 General election with 6,545 votes (70.4%) against Republican nominee Zach Thompson.[9]

## State microbe legislation

In 2017 Isaac Choy submitted legislation in the [Hawaii House of Representatives](/source/Hawaii_House_of_Representatives) to make *[Flavobacterium akiainvivens](/source/Flavobacterium_akiainvivens)* the [state microbe](/source/State_microbes).[10] This was mirrored by [Brian Taniguchi](/source/Brian_Taniguchi) in the [Hawaii Senate](/source/Hawaii_Senate).[11] This continues an effort started by [James Tokioka](/source/James_Tokioka) in 2013,[12] and later contested in 2014 by Senator [Glenn Wakai](/source/Glenn_Wakai)'s SB3124 bill proposing *[Aliivibrio fischeri](/source/Aliivibrio_fischeri)* instead.[13] As of December 2017, Hawaii has no official state microbe.
