**Irish Lad** (1900–1925) was an American [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) Champion [racehorse](/source/Horse_racing) and a [world record](/source/World_record) holder.

## Background

Irish Lad was bred by [H. Eugene Leigh](/source/H._Eugene_Leigh). In the fall of 1901 Leigh sold the yearling to [John Madden](/source/John_E._Madden) for $2,550. Madden conditioned him for racing and brought him to the track in the spring of 1902.

## Racing career

Irish Lad showed enough potential that [Herman Duryea](/source/Herman_B._Duryea) and [Harry Whitney](/source/Harry_Payne_Whitney) paid $17,500 for him.[1] Racing under the partners *[nom de course](/source/Glossary_of_North_American_horse_racing)*, Westbury Stable, and still trained by John Madden, Irish Lad won important races such as the [Great Trial Stakes](/source/Great_Trial_Stakes) at [Sheepshead Bay Race Track](/source/Sheepshead_Bay_Race_Track) and the [Saratoga Special Stakes](/source/Saratoga_Special_Stakes).[2] His 1902 performances earned him retrospective [American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt](/source/American_Champion_Two-Year-Old_Colt) honors.

As a three-year-old, Irish Lad's training was taken over by [John W. Rogers](/source/John_W._Rogers_(horse_trainer)). His biggest win of 1903 came on May 28 in the [Brooklyn Handicap](/source/Brooklyn_Handicap) at [Gravesend Race Track](/source/Gravesend_Race_Track) in which he set a new stakes record time.[3] Irish Lad set a new [track record](/source/Glossary_of_North_American_horse_racing#track_record/course_record) at [Saratoga Race Course](/source/Saratoga_Race_Course) in winning the Saratoga Champion Stakes in a time of 2:05 flat for a mile and one-quarter.[4]

In May 1904, four-year-old Irish Lad won the prestigious [Metropolitan Handicap](/source/Metropolitan_Handicap) at [Morris Park Racecourse](/source/Morris_Park_Racecourse)[5] then on June 26 at the Sheepshead Bay Race Track he set a world record of 2:17.60 for a mile and three eighths on dirt in winning the [Advance Stakes](/source/Advance_Stakes) over what the *[New York Times](/source/New_York_Times)* described as five of the best horses in the United States.[6] Irish Lad came out of the July 9 [Brighton Handicap](/source/Brighton_Handicap) badly lame and was retired [7] but in May 1905 it was announced that he was back in training.[8] In June 1905 Irish Lad finished ninth in an all-age handicap at Gravesend Race Track [9] and shortly thereafter was retired to [stud](/source/Stud_(animal)). ## Stud record

Irish Lad had sired only a few horses while at stud in the United States when the [Legislature of New York](/source/Legislature_of_New_York) passed the [Hart–Agnew anti-betting law](/source/Hart%E2%80%93Agnew_Law) that resulted in the complete shutdown of racing. As a consequence, Irish Lad, along with other horses owned by Duryea such as [Frizette](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Frizette&action=edit&redlink=1), were sent to his newly acquired [Haras du Gazon](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Haras_du_Gazon&action=edit&redlink=1) stud farm in [Neuvy-au-Houlme](/source/Neuvy-au-Houlme) in [Lower Normandy](/source/Lower_Normandy), France. There, he also met with limited success but did notably sire [Banshee](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Banshee_(horse)&action=edit&redlink=1), winner of the 1913 [Poule d'Essai des Pouliches](/source/Poule_d'Essai_des_Pouliches) (French 1000 Guineas) and [Pellsie](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pellsie&action=edit&redlink=1) who won the 1919 [Prix de Diane](/source/Prix_de_Diane) (French Oaks).

Irish Lad died Haras du Gazon in 1925 of old age.[11]
