'''Irene Romualdez Marcos-Araneta''' ({{IPA|tl|aɪˈɾin ˈmaɾkɔs|lang}}; born '''Maria Victoria Irene Romualdez Marcos'''; September 16, 1960) is the third child of the late former [president](/source/President_of_the_Philippines) [Ferdinand Marcos](/source/Ferdinand_Marcos) and former [first lady](/source/First_Lady_of_the_Philippines) [Imelda Marcos](/source/Imelda_Marcos). Her brother [Bongbong Marcos](/source/Bongbong_Marcos) is the current president of the Philippines.

Marcos's presence is known as being "the quiet one" because among the Marcos siblings, she is the only one not holding public office. Her best-remembered role in her father's 21-year rule involved expensive events, such as her 1983 wedding to Gregorio "Greggy" Maria Araneta III which was said to cost US$10.3 million,<ref>{{Cite book|last=Dalton|first=David|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=fvBc4Z60z0MC&q=irene+marcos+wedding+cost+US%2410.3+million&pg=PT889|title=The Rough Guide to the Philippines|date=September 6, 2007|publisher=Rough Guides UK|isbn=978-1-4053-8046-1|language=en}}</ref> and for her September 1985 party on the presidential yacht [BRP ''Ang Pangulo''](/source/BRP_Ang_Pangulo), whose lavishness caused a scandal when video coverage of it came out in the wake of the [1986 EDSA Revolution](/source/1986_EDSA_Revolution).<ref>{{Cite web|title=Filipinos Shocked, Disbelieving : Marcos' Video Collection Reveals Wild Disco Parties|url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1986-03-11-mn-3131-story.html|date=March 11, 1986|website=Los Angeles Times|language=en-US|access-date=May 22, 2020}}</ref>

She gained media attention after being tagged in the [Panama Papers](/source/Panama_Papers) leak,<ref name="icij" /> and for triggering student protests after her attendance in various campus events.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Protests greet Irene Marcos at UP play|url=https://www.philstar.com/nation/2019/09/08/1949873/protests-greet-irene-marcos-play|last=Mateo|first=Janvic|website=philstar.com|access-date=May 22, 2020}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|title=Irene Marcos was invited to Ateneo, and students are up in arms|url=https://www.rappler.com/philippines/227702-irene-marcos-invited-to-ateneo-students-protest-april-2019/|last=Paris|first=Janella|website=Rappler|date=April 8, 2019 |language=en|access-date=May 22, 2020}}</ref>

== Controversies ==
She, her mother and brother have moved for the reversal of the [Sandiganbayan](/source/Sandiganbayan)'s decision to forfeit in favor of the government all assets, investments, securities, properties, shares, interests, and funds of [Arelma Inc.](/source/Arelma) being managed by Merrill Lynch [Asset Management](/source/Investment_management) in New York.
