# Irano-Turanian Region

The **Irano-Turanian Region** is a [floristic region](/source/Phytochorion) located within the Tethyan Subkingdom of the [Holarctic Kingdom](/source/Boreal_Kingdom). It is divided into 12 [floristic provinces](/source/Phytochorion) according to the work of [Armen Takhtajan](/source/Armen_Takhtajan), a Soviet-Armenian botanist who created a classification system for [flowering plants](/source/Flowering_plant). One of the main characteristics of the region is a great diversity and abundance of species, especially in the [Iranian Plateau](/source/Iranian_Plateau). The region's climate is predominantly [continental](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification), with most of the precipitation occurring in the winter and spring.[1]
