**Ira Shor** (born June 2, 1945) is a professor at the [College of Staten Island](/source/College_of_Staten_Island), [City University of New York](/source/City_University_of_New_York), where he teaches composition and [rhetoric](/source/Rhetoric).[1] He is also doctoral faculty in the PhD Program in English at [The Graduate Center, CUNY](/source/The_Graduate_Center%2C_CUNY).[2]

## Biography

Shor grew up in the working class area in the [South Bronx](/source/South_Bronx) of [New York City](/source/New_York_City). Shor has stated that coming from a [working-class](/source/Working_class) area had a powerful influence on his thinking, politics and feelings.[3]

## Personal life

Shor has one son, [Paulo Shor](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Paulo_Shor&action=edit&redlink=1), whom he named after his main influence [Paulo Freire](/source/Paulo_Freire).
