'''Interstate 510''' ('''I-510''') is a short [spur route](/source/spur_route) of [I-10](/source/Interstate_10_(Louisiana)) within eastern [New Orleans](/source/New_Orleans), [Louisiana](/source/Louisiana), United States. It runs south from I-10, intersects with [U.S. Route 90](/source/U.S._Route_90_in_Louisiana), and ends at the Almonaster Boulevard [interchange](/source/interchange_(road)), near the [NASA](/source/NASA) [Michoud Assembly Facility](/source/Michoud_Assembly_Facility). From this point, the highway continues south over the [Gulf Intracoastal Waterway](/source/Gulf_Intracoastal_Waterway) / [Mississippi River Gulf Outlet](/source/Mississippi_River_Gulf_Outlet) on the [Green Bridge](/source/Green_Bridge_(New_Orleans)).

The Interstate spur route is a portion of Paris Road, a [New Orleans metropolitan area](/source/New_Orleans_metropolitan_area) roadway stretching from the [Mississippi River](/source/Mississippi_River) to [Lake Pontchartrain](/source/Lake_Pontchartrain) dating back to the 19th century. The portion designated I-510 is entirely within the [Ninth Ward of New Orleans](/source/Ninth_Ward_of_New_Orleans), though the area the highway runs through is locally known as [New Orleans East](/source/Eastern_New_Orleans).

==Route description==
thumb|left|Northern terminus from I-10 eastbound.
I-510 [runs concurrently](/source/concurrent_(road)) with [Louisiana Highway 47](/source/Louisiana_Highway_47) (LA 47) for its entire routing. The spur serves the NASA facility, the [St. Bernard Parish](/source/St._Bernard_Parish) seat of [Chalmette](/source/Chalmette%2C_Louisiana) (though the interstate portion ends a few miles north of the city, the highway continues as Paris Road), and the former [Six Flags New Orleans](/source/Six_Flags_New_Orleans).

I-510 exits are numbered from the parent route to the remote terminus, as is normal for spur interstates.<ref>{{cite web |title = Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 2009 Edition |url = https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009/part2/part2e.htm |publisher = FHWA |access-date = 1 April 2011 }}</ref>

==History==
What would eventually become I-510 was originally proposed in 1970 as a replacement for Paris Road, but was subsequently delayed due to environmental concerns.<ref name="October 13, 1992">{{cite news |first = Karen |last = Turni |title = I-510 link is nearly complete after 7 years of construction |publisher = New Orleans Times-Picayune |page = A1 |date = October 13, 1992 }}</ref> By 1981, an environmental impact statement was completed, and construction on the spur would commence in 1985.<ref name="October 13, 1992"/> The $87 million project saw its official ribbon-cutting on November 13, 1992.<ref name="November 14, 1992"/> I-510 was once planned as part of a longer [I-410](/source/Interstate_410_(Louisiana_1969)) that would have also incorporated [I-310](/source/Interstate_310_(Louisiana)) around the southern section of the [New Orleans metropolitan area](/source/New_Orleans_metropolitan_area).<ref>{{cite web |first= Richard F. |last= Weingroff |date= November 18, 2015 |url= https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructure/neworleans.cfm |title=The Battles of New Orleans: Vieux Carré Riverfront Expressway (I-310) |work= Highway History |publisher= Federal Highway Administration |access-date= February 9, 2016}}</ref>
