**Interlochen State Park** is a public recreation area covering 187 acres (76 ha) on the [isthmus](/source/Isthmus) between [Green Lake](/source/Green_Lake_(Grand_Traverse_County%2C_Michigan)) and [Duck Lake](/source/Duck_Lake_(Grand_Traverse_County%2C_Michigan)) in [Grand Traverse County](/source/Grand_Traverse_County%2C_Michigan), [Michigan](/source/Michigan). The park offers swimming, year-round fishing, picnicking, camping, and boat launches.[3]

## History

Interlochen State Park, originally called Pine Park, was established in 1917 when the [Michigan Legislature](/source/Michigan_Legislature) paid $60,000 for the land, making it the [State of Michigan](/source/State_of_Michigan)'s first officially recognized [state park](/source/State_park).[3][4] It was created to preserve for [future generations](/source/Future_generations) the virgin pine stand *([Pinus strobus](/source/Pinus_strobus))*.[5] It is one of the few easily reached places in Michigan where [old-growth](/source/Old-growth) (pre-[European](/source/European_American) settlement) [red pine](/source/Red_pine) can be found.[6][A]

In 1928, the [National Music Camp, Interlochen Center for the Arts](/source/Interlochen_Center_for_the_Arts) was established on the property adjoining the northern boundary of the park.[4]
