In [telecommunications](/source/Telecommunications), the **intercharacter interval** is the [time](/source/Time) interval between the end of the [stop signal](/source/Stop_signal) of one [character](/source/Character_(computing)) and the beginning of the [start signal](/source/Start_signal) of the next character of an [asynchronous transmission](/source/Asynchronous_communication).

The intercharacter interval may be of any duration. The signal sense of the intercharacter interval is always the same as the sense of the stop element, *i.e.*, "1" or "[mark](/source/Mark_(computing))."
