Video encoding and decoding hardware by Intel

**Intel Quick Sync Video** is [Intel](/source/Intel)'s brand for its dedicated [video encoding and decoding](/source/Video_codec) hardware [core](/source/Semiconductor_intellectual_property_core). Quick Sync was introduced with the [Sandy Bridge](/source/Sandy_Bridge) CPU microarchitecture on 9 January 2011 and has been found on the [die](/source/Die_(integrated_circuit)) of Intel CPUs ever since.

The name "Quick Sync" refers to the use case of quickly [transcoding](/source/Transcoding) ("converting") a video from, for example, a [DVD](/source/DVD) or [Blu-ray Disc](/source/Blu-ray_Disc) to a format appropriate to, for example, a [smartphone](/source/Smartphone), in situations where speed is more important than the best possible quality.

Unlike video encoding on a CPU or a [general-purpose GPU](/source/General-purpose_computing_on_graphics_processing_units), Quick Sync is a dedicated hardware [core](/source/Semiconductor_intellectual_property_core) on the processor [die](/source/Die_(integrated_circuit)). This allows for much more power-efficient video processing.[1][2]

## Availability

Quick Sync Video is available on Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, and Core i9 and new Core Ultra processors starting with Sandy Bridge, and Celeron & Pentium processors starting with Haswell.[3][4]

## Performance and quality

Like most desktop hardware-accelerated encoders, Quick Sync has been praised for its speed.[5] The eighth annual MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video codecs comparison showed that Quick Sync was comparable to [x264](/source/X264) superfast preset in terms of speed, compression ratio and quality ([SSIM](/source/SSIM));[6] tests were performed on an Intel [Core i7](/source/Core_i7)-3770 ([Ivy Bridge](/source/Ivy_Bridge_(microarchitecture))) processor. However, Quick Sync could not be configured to spend more time to achieve higher quality, whereas x264 improved significantly when allowed to use more time using the recommended settings.[6]

A 2012 evaluation by [AnandTech](/source/AnandTech) showed that QuickSync on Intel's Ivy Bridge produced similar image quality compared to the [NVENC](/source/NVENC) encoder on Nvidia's GTX 680 while performing much better at resolutions lower than 1080p.[7]

## Development

Main article: [Intel Graphics Technology § Capabilities (GPU video acceleration)](/source/Intel_Graphics_Technology#Capabilities_(GPU_video_acceleration))

Quick Sync was first unveiled at Intel Developer Forum 2010 (September 13) but, according to *Tom's Hardware*, Quick Sync had been conceptualized five years before that.[1] The older [Clarkdale](/source/Clarkdale_(microprocessor)) microarchitecture had hardware video decoding support, but no hardware encoding support;[5] it was known as [Intel Clear Video](/source/Intel_Clear_Video).

**Version 1 ([Sandy Bridge](/source/Sandy_Bridge))**
- Quick Sync was initially built into some [Sandy Bridge](/source/Sandy_Bridge) CPUs, but not into Sandy Bridge Pentiums or Celerons. It adds [H.264/AVC](/source/Advanced_Video_Coding) encoding and [VC-1](/source/VC-1) decoding acceleration.[8]

**Version 2 ([Ivy Bridge](/source/Ivy_Bridge_(microarchitecture)), [Bay Trail](/source/Bay_Trail_(system_on_chip)))**
- The [Ivy Bridge](/source/Ivy_Bridge_(microarchitecture)) microarchitecture included a "next-generation" implementation of Quick Sync.[9]

**Version 3 ([Haswell](/source/Haswell_(microarchitecture)))**
- The [Haswell](/source/Haswell_(microarchitecture)) microarchitecture implementation adds [H.262/MPEG-2 Part 2](/source/H.262%2FMPEG-2_Part_2) encoding acceleration.[1] An open-source hybrid driver was developed which supports partial [VP8](/source/VP8) encoding and [VP9](/source/VP9) decoding acceleration under Linux by utilizing both the integrated GPU and CPU[10][11], although as of 2023 Intel had explicitly abandoned both this driver[12] and pre-Kaby Lake accelerated VP8 encoding.[13] Starting from Haswell, Pentiums and Celerons have included QSV technology.[14]

**Version 4 ([Broadwell](/source/Broadwell_(microarchitecture)))**
- The [Broadwell](/source/Broadwell_(microarchitecture)) microarchitecture implementation adds VP8 hardware decoding.[15] Also, it has two independent [bit stream decoder](/source/Bit_stream_decoder) (BSD) rings to process video commands on GT3 GPUs; this allows one BSD ring to process decoding and the other BSD ring to process encoding at the same time.[16]

**Version 5 ([Skylake](/source/Skylake_(microarchitecture)))**
- The [Skylake](/source/Skylake_(microarchitecture)) microarchitecture implementation adds a full fixed-function [H.265/HEVC](/source/High_Efficiency_Video_Coding) 8-bit 4:2:0 decoding and encoding acceleration, hybrid and partial HEVC 10-bit decoding acceleration, [JPEG](/source/JPEG) encoding acceleration for resolutions up to 16,000×16,000 pixels, and partial VP9 decoding and encoding acceleration[17], although on Linux Intel has explicitly abandoned both the required "hybrid" driver[18] and Skylake accelerated VP9 decoding.[19]

**Version 6 ([Kaby Lake](/source/Kaby_Lake_(microarchitecture)), [Coffee Lake](/source/Coffee_Lake), [Whiskey Lake](/source/Whiskey_Lake), [Comet Lake](/source/Comet_Lake))**
- The [Kaby Lake](/source/Kaby_Lake), [Coffee Lake](/source/Coffee_Lake), [Whiskey Lake](/source/Whiskey_Lake) and [Comet Lake](/source/Comet_Lake) microarchitectures implementation adds full fixed-function H.265/HEVC 10-bit 4:2:0 decoding and encoding acceleration, and full fixed-function VP9 8-bit and 10-bit decoding acceleration and 8-bit encoding acceleration.[20][21]

**Version 7 ([Ice Lake](/source/Ice_Lake_(microprocessor)))**
- The [Ice Lake](/source/Ice_Lake_(microprocessor)) microarchitecture implementation adds VP9 8-bit and 10-bit decoding and encoding acceleration, H.265/HEVC 8-bit and 10-bit decoding and encoding acceleration with 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 chroma subsampling,[22] HDR10 Tone Mapping[23] and Open Source Media Shaders.[24] HEVC hardware encoding quality has also been improved.[25]

**Version 8 ([Tiger Lake](/source/Tiger_Lake_(microprocessor)), [Rocket Lake](/source/Rocket_Lake), [Alder Lake](/source/Alder_Lake_(microprocessor)), [Raptor Lake](/source/Raptor_Lake))**
- The [Tiger Lake](/source/Tiger_Lake_(microprocessor)), [Rocket Lake](/source/Rocket_Lake), [Alder Lake](/source/Alder_Lake_(microprocessor)) & [Raptor Lake](/source/Raptor_Lake) microarchitectures implementation adds VP9 12-bit & 12-bit 4:4:4 hardware decoding and HEVC 12-bit 4:2:0, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 hardware decoding.[26] Gen12 Xe will also support native AV1 decode, which includes 10-bit 4:2:0 16K stills and 10-bit 4:2:0 8K, 4K and 2K video.[27] Hardware encoding for VP8 was dropped and hardware decoding is only available on Tiger Lake.[22]

**Version 9 ([Intel Arc](/source/Intel_Arc) Alchemist, [Meteor Lake](/source/Meteor_Lake), [Arrow Lake](/source/Arrow_Lake_(microprocessor)))**
- Intel Arc Alchemist (discrete GPUs) adds 8K 10-bit AV1 hardware encoding.[28] It removed [VC-1](/source/VC-1) hardware decoding.

**Version 10 (Intel [Lunar Lake](/source/Lunar_Lake))**
- Adds [VVC](/source/Versatile_Video_Coding) hardware decoding in Xe2 GPU.[29]

## Operating system support

The Quick Sync Video [SIP core](/source/Semiconductor_intellectual_property_core) needs to be supported by the [device driver](/source/Device_driver). The device driver provides one or more [interfaces](/source/Application_programming_interface), for example [VDPAU](/source/Video_Decode_and_Presentation_API_for_Unix), [Video Acceleration API](/source/Video_Acceleration_API) (VA-API) or [DXVA](/source/DirectX_Video_Acceleration) for video decoding, and [OpenMAX IL](/source/OpenMAX_IL) or VA API for video encoding. One of these interfaces is then used by end-user software, for example [VLC media player](/source/VLC_media_player) or [GStreamer](/source/GStreamer), to access the Quick Sync Video hardware and make use of it.

### Linux

Quick Sync support on [Linux](/source/Linux) is available by both Intel VAAPI Driver (legacy, pre-Broadwell) and Intel Media Driver (Broadwell and newer) which also uses [VA-API](/source/Video_Acceleration_API),[30][31] and through the Intel Media SDK.

### Windows

Microsoft offers support for Quick Sync in Windows (in [Windows Vista](/source/Windows_Vista) and later) based on supporting driver software from Intel and support through both [DirectX](/source/DirectX) as well as WMF ([Windows Media Foundation](/source/Windows_Media_Foundation)). A wide range of applications are based upon this base support for the technology in Windows.

### macOS

[Apple](/source/Apple_Inc.) added Quick Sync support in [OS X Mountain Lion](/source/OS_X_Mountain_Lion) for [AirPlay](/source/AirPlay), [FaceTime](/source/FaceTime), [iTunes](/source/ITunes), [Safari](/source/Safari_(web_browser)), [QuickTime X](/source/QuickTime), [iMovie](/source/IMovie), [Final Cut Pro X](/source/Final_Cut_Pro_X), [Motion](/source/Motion_(software)) and [Compressor](/source/Compressor_(software)). Third-party software includes [Adobe Premiere Pro](/source/Adobe_Premiere_Pro), Adobe Media Encoder, [DaVinci Resolve](/source/DaVinci_Resolve) and others.

## Hardware decoding and encoding

Support for Quick Sync hardware accelerated decoding of H.264, MPEG-2, and VC-1 video is widely available. One common way to gain access to the technology on Microsoft Windows is by use of the free [ffdshow](/source/Ffdshow) filter. Some other free software like [VLC media player](/source/VLC_media_player) (since version 2.1.0 "Rincewind") supports Quick Sync as well. Many commercial applications also benefit from the technology today, including CyberLink [PowerDVD](/source/PowerDVD), CyberLink PowerDirector and MacroMotion Bogart "gold" edition.

According to the [ffdshow](/source/Ffdshow) documentation, Quick Sync has very low CPU utilization while being about twice as fast as [libavcodec](/source/Libavcodec).[32]

Support for hardware-assisted media encoding tailored for Quick Sync is widely available. Examples of such software with Quick Sync support during encoding processes are [Jellyfin](/source/Jellyfin),[33] [Emby Media Server](https://emby.media),[34] [Plex Media Server](/source/Plex_(software)),[35] Badaboom Media Converter, CyberLink MediaShow, CyberLink MediaEspresso, ArcSoft MediaConverter, [MAGIX](/source/MAGIX) Video Pro X, [Pinnacle Studio](/source/Pinnacle_Studio) (since version 18), [Roxio Toast](/source/Roxio_Toast), [Roxio Creator](/source/Roxio_Creator), [XSplit Broadcaster](/source/XSplit_Broadcaster),[36] XSplit Gamecaster[37] (all commercial) and projects like [HandBrake](/source/HandBrake),[38][39] [Open Broadcaster Software](/source/Open_Broadcaster_Software)[40] or applications for operation with a video content entering in Adobe CC2018.

The following table shows fixed-function encode/decode support for various Intel platforms.[41][42] Support for hybrid and/or partial decode/encode are not detailed.
