==History==
Founder and [CEO](/source/Chief_executive_officer) [Kathy Kemper](/source/Kathy_Kemper) created the Institute for Education in 1991 when her husband, James Valentine, suggested she organize a breakfast to introduce her political contacts with his business colleagues. IFE established a reputation for diplomacy by facilitating the first-ever regional summit between the Governors of Maryland, Virginia, and the Mayor of DC ([Bob Ehrlich](/source/Bob_Ehrlich), [Mark Warner](/source/Mark_Warner), and [Anthony A. Williams](/source/Anthony_A._Williams) respectively.)<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.washdiplomat.com/DPouch/2013/February/story4Warner.html |title=The Diplomatic Pouch |website=www.washdiplomat.com |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130830111458/http://washdiplomat.com/DPouch/2013/February/story4Warner.html |archive-date=August 30, 2013}} </ref>

Since 2012, the Institute for Education has shown a greater focus on technology and innovation, praising collaboration between the federal government and private sector, as seen by the [Presidential Innovation Fellow](/source/Presidential_Innovation_Fellow) (PIF) program. Two of the four founders of the PIF program are members of IFE Leadership: former U.S. Chief Technology Officer [Todd Park](/source/Todd_Park) and former White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Senior Advisor for Innovation [John Paul Farmer](/source/John_Paul_Farmer).<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kathy-kemper/celebrating-the-most-inno_b_11889554.html|title=Celebrating the Most Innovative in Government|website=[HuffPost](/source/HuffPost)|date=September 7, 2016}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.instituteforeducation.org/about-ife/board-staff/ |title=Board & Staff |website=www.instituteforeducation.org |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131001225552/http://www.instituteforeducation.org/about-ife/board-staff/ |archive-date=October 1, 2013}} </ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.instituteforeducation.org/about-ife/supporters/|title = Supporters – Institute for Education}}</ref>
